Hi all

Im thinking of building a M4A3E8 but I want to do it in british army colours, my only problem is I dont know if the british army ever had any?

Also does anyone know of any 1/72 M4A3E8 kits? As I have'nt really got any room for a 1/35 kit

Any Help would be greatly appreciated

I don't think the Brits used the M4A3E8, but they did have 5 M4A2E8 under the designation 'Sherman 111AY', one of which is in the reserve collection at Bovington. I built one of these in 1/35 a few years ago.

If'n I remember correctly, the British army recieved a few (like less than 10) M4A3s, but I'm not sure any were M4A3E8s and never had them in service. They were strictly for test and not for unit service.

Canada used them in Korea 1950-53, should you wish to do a British Commonwealth marking scheme on an Easy Eight.

There weren't any in UK service. The British Army received M4, M4A1, M4A2 and M4A4 tanks. They received only a few samples of the M4A3 series, which was the preferred version for US Army service from 1944 on (earlier M4A3 dry stowage tanks were held for training in the US, while combat units received the wet stowage versions with the 47 degree hull front--only a handful of the dry stowage version went overseas in the final months of the war). As mentioned, the Canadian Army traded their Achilles tank destroyers for M4A3E8 Shermans when they went to Korea in 1950. British units in Korea used Centurions (along with a few Churchill Crocodiles and some Cromwell Mk VII tanks used for recce).

As for kits in 1/72 scale there's Trumpeters E8 korean version, and Dragon does one too but it doesn't have the tracks of the korean vesion ( I don't know what particular type/name of tracks that are on the post-ww 2 Sherman but they are wider and have a different drive sprocket that the earlier ones)
Hope this points you in the right direction.

A bit smaller than 1/35 is the 1/48 scale M4A3E8 tank kit by Hobby Boss. A decent, well detailed kit that is relatively inexpensive.

The closest I have found is this archer sheet:

http://www.archertransfers.com/AR35168.html

It's 1/35, but the smaller signs might be OK for a tank in 1/48. THey are too large for 1/72, tough. Of course, in 1/72 the 25 Brigade sign wouldn't be too hard to simply paint on.
