when doing the hairspray technique what type of top layer paint is best? acrylic or enamel? right now, i have burnt umber enamel over a gray enamel primer. im going to do a top layer of white over a hairspray layer. so, just need to know what type of paint is easiest to deal with when doing this technique. also, is there anything im missing. this is really my first time doing this. so, i dont wanna botch it up

They should both work fine. I think most people use acrylics(myself included), but I´ve seen tests on the Mig forum with enamels which turned out ok.
Anyway, I think you shall do some tests on some scrap plastic, before you try the technique on your model. Personally I think the technique looks great if executed correctly, but it can be quite hard to control and I think for most people it requires some training to get the hang of it.
Good luck!

You should take a look at Rob Ferreira's videos he uses the hairspray technique.

Hi
You might want to give Tamiya Acrylics a go for the top coat on hairspray, I find it has a week bond at the best of times and is one of the easiest paints to remove with just water and even easier with a drop of IPA. Don't use it as the undercoat though or you will find that comming off as well.

I only tried it once so far, and my enamel topcoat didn't budge at all. I certainly did something wrong, and I think enamel was the main culprit.

Friend,
I would say go with Vallejo or Tamiya. You can base coat with acrylic, seal with a laquer, then hairspray, then top coat with acrylic. You can use tap water or rubbing alcohol to chip and remove the top hairspray coat. However, if you use alcohol, be real carefull as this can and will remove everything!
Also, note that the longer you let the top coat over hairspray cure, the effect will be different.

and by this, im assuming that letting it dry longer, you would have to work harder to get it to remove? and the effect would be a much more labor intensive yet subtle paint chipping?? vs a fresher coat where pretty much everything will lift and be easier to remove with the touch of a brush? Also, note that the longer you let the top coat over hairspray cure, the effect will be different.

guys,
got a few question here..
basically what i did was to apply the hair spray using old brush or sponge and then do the rest is all the same... i never airbrush the hair spray...
my question
1. Is it safe to airbrush the hairspray and then what will happen to the area that has been airbrush with the hair spray but never get chipped?
2. is the top layer and undercoat will stand the hairspray layer for a long period?? Will it melt the top layer after long time?
3. how long is the optimum curing time for the hairspray before chipping process started??
