From Great Models, Revell is about to repop this SPG. It's nameless, but according to my copy of Green & Sarson's "Armor of the Vietnam War: Allied Forces" it appears to be an M-55, used by the USMC in Vietnam. What do you think?

Yes, that is the old Renwal M55 8" Howitzer in 1/32 scale. It will take work, but can be made into a great model. Here is more info on it.

Vim Wink did an awesome job on one. Click on Construction articles and M55 8" SP Hw.

I plan on building one as well.

Thanks, that was helpful and interesting. Although there's no aftermarket stuff specifically made for this SPG it seems that some of what's out there will be very useful in detailing it.
Now, if only Italeri would repop their M-108, I'd be in hog heaven!

My brother Gino gave you some background, here are some walkaround pics

of the M55 http://www.redleg2scale.com/walkaround%20gallery/M55.html

Now if you get creative you can make the 155mm gun version using the kit...also known as the M53. Here is a walk around of that

http://www.redleg2scale.com/walkaround%20gallery/M53.html

Nice to see the kit back out....need to pick up a spare......sooo much artillery, sooo little time

Rounds Complete!!

Great pics, thanks. I really like SPGs, their size is impressive and people who look at my shelves are usually drawn to them. The M-55 is an interesting vehicle, I've been looking at some of the pics in my copy of Concord's "Armor of the Vietnam War: Allied Forces" and getting some ideas together.

I saw the Marines with a very old looking 155mm SP ( M53?) broke down on the road thru Fat City sometime before June of 1968. We stopped to offer help, and they said the had a retriever on the way. I never saw Marines use an 8" M55, and if they did, they must have had it up on the DMZ. Up and untill the latter part of 1968 most all Marine heavy arty was supplied with Army units attached to them using M110's and M107's. Might add here that all those attached arty units still came under the heading of the Americal Div. Artillary, and never really the Marine Corps even though they were attached. There was later a short span of time when the marines actually used M110 and M107 SPG's (the first class at Sill wasn't till very early 1969). These groups were pretty much phased out with the 3/18th and maybe three other batallions moving up that way sometime in mid 1970. Those units operated as independent arty units comming under the Americal Div. umbrella. I'd expect not to find any M55's in I-Corps.
