To Simply answer your question, the answer is yes. The British Army as well as Commonwealth Troops used additional armor on the Tanks Mostly extra Track Links.

Check out this picture,

The tank has wheels and spare track welded to the turret sides. This, and other photos can be found here, http://home.t-online.de/home/RIJONUE/glaser2.htm

The Picture is great but the Spare Road Wheels are not added as extra Armor but as spare parts to the suspension. These were carried to replace road wheels that were shedding their rubber tires(Usually the front pair), look closely at them and you will see they are detachable and brand new. The Track is however used as extra Armor in this photo it is all over the front of the tank.

The wheels may or may not be welded on, but they would still give added protection. This is the caption from the site the picture was taken from.

"Cromwell" tank at listening post near the river Maas embankment. Note the two track wheels and track parts on the tank’s turret and in front of the tank. Both items were welded on and were supposed to deflect armour piercing shells. Opposite is the building where the cat played with the billiard balls.
