Hi guys,
Several weeks ago I asked some info about the old Italeri M-108 sp.
That problem was solved !
Now, in one of the answers Redleg12 told me that the 42nd Division National Guard ( 1st -258th Artillery ) used the old M115 howitzer untill the early eightes.
For some weeks now I've tried to get some info about this unit, but NO luck !!
I must have tried whatever combination of words to search the Internet !!
Can someone conform OR deny the fact that the old M115 howitser was used untill the early eightes.
Thanks,
Gé

now I can't give you an exact time frame, but there was at least on N.G. unit in Indiana that used M115's well into the 1970's or even 1980's. I have one parked nearby in pristene condition

Hi Gary,
According to the Internet that unit wouuld have been 2/150FA.
I found their lineage stating that in 1987 ( !!!!!!!! ) their D-battery at Lebanon, Indiana was equipped with the 8"towed ( = M-115 )
Great info, thank you !!!

I joined 4/20th FA (USAR) in Lansing, MI, as Battalion XO in 1992. At that time we had M110A2 (long tube 8"SPs). We also had an M115 parked outside the Reserve Center, so I suspect that the unit also was equipped previously with the towed version, but I have no idea if that's correct, and if so when the change might have been made. All the Combat Arms units in the USAR were inactivated in 1993 and there's not many folks around I can check with who might know what the unit had and when they got it.
It's somewhat hit or miss on equippment. I joined 1/182nd FA (MIARNG) in 1977 and that unit was equipped with M110 (short tube 8"SP) at that time, so the fielding of newer equippment clearly varied over the time frame, no doubt based on the "tiered readiness" level.

Gary, Tom,
The info I found and got through you both was more then enough to make either model 1/258FA or 2/150 FA.
Today I ordered the AFV Club M115 so the making of this model can start !!
Thanks again to the both of you !!
Gé
PS Tom, I did send you an PM.

So I take that to mean that 1/258 did have the M115 during that time period. Any idea when they turned them in and what they got in exchange?

Hi Tom,
Somewhere in the 1980's they made the switch to M110 and later on they all turned to M119 105mm howitzers.
Mike,
Tom gave me a link directly to the NY National Guard and they gave me all the info I needed !

Ge - Glad to hear you have what you need
Tom - Somtime in the 80s, with the Regan buildup and some unit consoladation. The went from M12s in WWII to M115 at some point in the 1950s and a slow switch to M110s thru late 70s in 1980
The twist of fate is today, the 1/258 is an M119 105mm unit

that sounds about right to me. Here's why: I lived in Whiteland at the time, and for a couple weeks every summer you could hear them shoot. That's about 15 miles away! Somebody also shot M109's at least once (I saw them setup on the stae owned side of the road), and seems like I also saw M110's in that same field once as well.

1987 sounds right actually, but maybe wrong. I moved out in 1992, and the shooting was at least five or six years prior. My wife's Uncle lived due south of their impact range by maybe three miles, and remember him talking about shaking everything in his house on a visit.
