Hi fellas,
I'm building an M54 5ton cargo truck & would like to ask a couple of questions about the winch.
Does the front bumper (fender?) fit upside down as it would on the M35 when a winch is fitted to the vehicle?
And is there some kind of a lever on the winch that I would need to fit like I have in my M35A1 build? I seem to remember that somebody said that it is fitted to the port side on the M54 as opposed to the starboard side like on the M35 but I just want to make sure.
Any M54 winch photos would be a great help.
Thanks fellas.
Joe.

There's a lever on one side of the spool that controlls the winch. As for the bumper question; I cannot answer that as all the M35's and M54's we had also had the winch. And even then a M35 was not the truck anybody wanted to use. Perhaps frenchy has some good photos?

Hi

Here's the M54 front winch :

and here's the front winch fitted with the level wind device and a cable tensioner (part #3). Movement of cable under tension over the level wind sheave causes the sheave trolley to move from side to side and wind the cable in layers :

I knew you'd come thru! By the way that cable is only about 12.7mm in diameter, and never seems to go back on the spool like it came off! It's rather common for last three or four meters to be wrapped around the bumper in a figure eight fashion.
