Am finally getting around to the Tamiya SdKfz 9 (so-called "FAMO") in my stash, and have resin tops (front and cargo areas) along with side-curtains. I had originally thought of doing the build as a DAK vehicle, but wondered if the side curtains especially would be used in the desert? A definite for the Eastern Front, but white camo doesn't get my blood racing, and I already have several vehicles that MUST be white (e.g., two with Winterketten).
Frenchy, you've been awfully quite lately, LOL!

I have the Decalstar sets.
I don't have the patience or interest to build tarps from tissues for this one. I have both Aber sets, and they will take me enough time to implement, LOL!
Thanks, Frenchy. The one towing an Elefant is interesting.

Thanks, Gents, that's REALLY helpful!
Common sense says they would use the side curtains to keep the grit minimized, but common sense never works in this hobby, LOL!.

Hi Bill,
While I have been reseaching photos on the net for my DAK Sdkfz 7 I stumbled across several good photos of captured 7's wearing side skirts in the desert - as well as that picture of the recovery Famo - they were all on the Australian War Museum's website (awm.gov.au)
Might be worth a look - i made mine out of rolled Tamiya putty and added the creases as the putty was going off.
The link below has a nice picture of a captured 7' in Libya (as per caption)
The site also has some great photos of the sdkfz 6 "Diana" too- some complete, others in not so great shape.....

Thanks, Harv.
Anyone have any insight on what color the tarps were? I've seen all kinds of suggestions from brown to buff to field gray.

I would try something in tone with the color of the vehicle itself. Here is an image of FAMO that was not restored. Seems like it used to be gray?
And here is one restored:
BTW, if you need some literature about FAMO let me know in PM. (I have several books as PDF files.)

Thanks, guys, for the added photos.
Brian, I have watched episodes of "WW2 in Color," and found the colorizations to be uneven. When colorizing is done frame-by-frame, those doing it can tint the shading, but in many cases, filters are used that may or may not render the color accurately. I saw some Panzers in pre-overall gray mode, and it clearly showed duotone camo, but the colors where a bright green and tan.
On a positive note, you can see them loading the ammo bags for the tank-mounted MGs. The styrene and resin versions of those bags never quite look like they have bandoliers of bullets in them, LOL.
