A gravity feed airbrush is better for modeling, and I suggest you look for Vallejo Model Air paints. They are pre-thinned and formulated for the airbrush, which makes things a lot easier. They are also outstanding paints. Usually you buy the colors you need for your current build, or buy a boxed set, and build up your paint library as you go.
Everybody has their own basic tools and add and add over the years. You can start with a pair of clippers, a #11 knife, a few manicure boards, and a bottle of Tamiya Extra Thin cement. You can build a whole model with just those, but you'll soon realize what additions will make your life easier.

Take it easy, and have a think about what your next colour would be; there's lots of good info on this site; browse it! You're sure to find good info.
My style is to paint the model up as tho it was new, and then to add whatever I wanted to portray what I wanted. Some add green putty in all the right places to simulate mud (not too thickly, mind!), and colour that to be the mud; my style is pigments.
But I would say to you take your time, there are many ways to skin these cats.
