There was a thread on this not too long ago, I believe some speculated it was some sort of larger caliber almost artillery-like prototype based on the Abrams platform. I'll look for the thread if somebody doesn't get to it before meh.

There is a tread over on MP.net about it aswell, some thought it may be a M1A3 prototype?

It's an Abrams hull with an prototype turret. That's all, really!

This is one of at least two prototypes called "Thumper".
Essentialy it is scalled down and simplified CATTB.
Here is second prototype with slightly different turret.
Here is CATTB:
Both are armed with what it seems a bit different variations of XM291 smoothbore gun with interchangabale callibers from 120mm to 140mm.

Wow! More smoke projectors than a KISS concert, and side skirts cut from Annie Oakley's fringed buckskin jacket...

The lower part looks like a an american "M1 Abrams" tank, but also the turret looks a bit like the same vehicle.
The turret looks like "lenghtened"... but I think, the vehicle is one of the "M1 Abrams" tanks; but a special version. (perhaps a test-vehicle for enhanced stowage of ammunition (weight/moveable-ratio-tests) - see the "lenghtened" turret)
This looks very strange to me.
greetings...

Smoke launchers were probably part of some sort of defence system.

Do You read what people are writing?
This is an prototype for further M1 series development.
Turret was so big for enhanced protection and because it was armed with 140mm gun.
Besides this turret was only placed on standard M1 hull for tests, normally as in case of CATTB new hull but very similiar to the standard one, would be designed and builded.
I had somewhere official documents about CATTB development, besides turret hull there was also new, strenghtened because of 140mm gun.

Matt, to be honest i don't like kit of protypes. Usually they are too clean for my tastes and in my opinion there are few possibilities to set they in interesting dioramas.
I don't like either paper panzers.
If i want to depict something unreal (or almost unreal) I'll prefere doing a sci fi model
Anyway, I understand your point of view
The tank has a really impressive and "attractive" shape. It seems a M1a1 more aggressive. A sort of huge bad "stealth" tank
cheers

Oh US had many more prototypes and projects for M1A3/M1 Block III or completely new vehicle.
Some concept drawings are in Richard Hunnicutt book "Abrams A History Of The American Main Battle Tank volume 2".

Who is stopping you? Grab a bunch of Evergreen plastic and build one. As for myself, I have no time for a prototype like this.
