OK, I've been trying to figure this out without success--
It seems that 1/35th figures vary A LOT in size, with Tristar smaller than most (but not all) of the Dragon figures, at least in Wehrmacht. I picked up some Legends heads cheaply online, but they are much too small for the Dragon figures. I just ordered some Hornet heads, but they still seem a bit small. Is there a "secret formula" for matching heads to bodies? I know Tank figures run on the larger side...

This one size fits all thing seems to puzzle me. In any group of soldiers(people) , there are persons of all sizes shapes etc. Have you not ever seen people with either thin faces or fat faces or large heads that don't match their body size ? Whoever decides to make figures seems to make them generally fit , trim and always the same height and build. Whats up with that???? I have WW 2 pics of my dad next to his two best buddies. Dad, short and small, La Rosa, medium and Bentivenga, a great big guy. I am not so sure that it really matters what heads go on whatever figures so long as they fit properly under whatever helmet you might use. Just an opinion..............Al

Al, I don't have a problem mixing sizes of figures within a dio (Tristar, DML, Tank), but if you put the Legends heads on the DML bodies, the result is more like Zippy the Pinhead from R. Crumb's comix.

Bill, I find sculpting a scarf or a shirt collar around the neck can sometimes disguise the fact the head doesn't quite fit. Its not too difficult or time consuming either, a couple of small piecesof magic-sculpt and a shaping tool (even a cocktail stick) can get the job done to a good degree.
I recently just finished a diorama with a lot of figures, some of which required chopping and changing of various appendages and it is frustrating when you get significant size variations, even allowing for the fact not all people are of similar height or build. You might want to try some other aftermarket heads- perhaps Verlinden?

Karl, thanks for the scarf suggestion. I'm hoping someone here can rank the AM head makers by size and suggest good matches. I understand Tank is usually the largest, with Tristar among the smallest of styrene figure makers.

WOW...........That Zippy the Pinhead really hit me hard I get the picture. A thing that I noticed about figures particularly US ones. Most of the uniforms are nicely tailored and fit real nice. In reality , they were baggy as h..l and did not fit for crap. Wish they would get real about this well known fact when they produce new figures..........................Al

i've come across this too Bill had some hornet heads that looked too small on a set of dragon figures, yet fit perfectly on a set of tamiya figures. i've found verlinden's spare heads fit well on dragon's fgures, especially some of their older figures which seemed bigger than their current figures.

been following this thread as i have seen lots of people use Hornet heads and have considered buying a set in the near future. i wish i could see them at a store before buying, something online shopping does not provide me.
off topic: as for baggy US uniforms, i wish they made them like Hot Toys does them in 1/6th scale... these guys just nail the look:
if someone had a list of each manufacturers' figures and how they would be classified proportionally for 1/35th (ie: Tank - quite large, Warriors - large, Dragon - slightly small, etc...) so that it can be a reference for AM heads and using them together. cheers, bd.

This isn't an all inclusive list but Tim Streeter's done a pretty fair job of a general classification of manufacturer's sizes here.
The whole article is quite good but you can skip halfway down the page for a bulleted list.
Hope this helps.

Thanks, Don, that's going in the right direction, but still not a guide on which heads would go with which bodies....

Im glad you have brought this up Bill as its something thats been annoying me for a while,
Hornet are perfect for dragon bodies because they dont look that small however you cant use Hornet on a Verlinden body way out of scale.
I have to reply about the differences in body heights and widths all very very true that no 2 people are alike and bodies echo that
But,..
There are noticable differences when putting the wrong head onto the wrong torso,...
this also includes Hands and boots
The rule of thumb is that the bigger figures are 54mm but disguise themselves as 1/35 which is of course not true when they should be 1/32-1/30
The chap about to order Hornet heads you cant go wrong with them, mate, they are superb !

Hey Bill,
Some sort of guide would be nice but I have never seen anything like that. For me, I just kinda go threww my collection of replacement heads and try to find one that looks right. Barring that, I use the figure as is. My stash is an odd collection of Hornet, Ultracast and Warrior.

thanks Don, the internet is just full of helpful info and though it doesn't answer the head/body issue it does give a foundation and insight to the problem of "peanut headitis" in 1/35th. cheers, bd.
