Do most modelers add groundwork (like sand) to textured bases (say a desert base of molded-on resin sand and sand cracks) for a more realistic look?
Would painting a textured base "as is" be deemed lazy and not going far enough?
Then when would one paint a textured resin base "as is" and when would one add groundwork to one? (That is, would one leave cobblestones and streets alone, but add groundwork to snow, grass, sand, mud, and other resin textured bases?).

Its a matter of personal choice , what looks good to you , and what effect your looking for . Some bases ( cobble stone roadway & a sidewalk ) only need a dark wash to give it some depth and a little dry brushing to give it some hi lites . Another base , say a foxhole with a pile of cast sand bags and debri , could use extra bags ( plastic , resin or putty ) and much more 3D style ground cover . Some might need 3 or 4 layers on top of the cast details to look like a pile of loose rubble instead of a big cast lump .
Experiment by just setting pieces on the base , build up the layers untill it gives you the result your looking for , then start gluing stuff down .
