Hi Richard (and welcome!)
AFAIK, you can go with dark yellow. The original dark gray was painted over with dark yellow when the Kubels arrived in North Africa (maybe the interior remained grey, but I'm not sure about that ) Later other camo schemes were used as well. You'll find some info here :

Here are a few early pics. You can notice that they're not fitted with sand (balloon) tires.

Hi Richard ...I just finished mine and I painted it panzer gray first and then added the Ral 8000 and 7027 to the exterior...I left the underside gray for contrast as well...this is how it turned out...

Rich;
Hi
VW which arrived in Africa earlier in 1941 did so wearing their original factory-paint (dunkelgrau RAL 7021) - and later received some version of "sand yellow" (either gelbbraun RAL 8000 or another yellow or "graugrun" RAL 7008, or sometimes a combo of) after arrival in theatre. It was increasingly common thru 1941 into 1942 for Africa-bound vehicles to be over-painted in Europe before heading over.
Factories base-coated all vehicles in the dunkelgrau up to early 1943, when dunkelgelb RAL 7028 became the official base color. Apparently few of these dunkelgelb vehicles made it to Africa... but various books seem to label some later DAK vehicles as being "dark yellow" as versus "sand yellow" or other DAK colors.
So... your VW in Africa was originally dunkelgrau, and the over-painting could be quite varied, but most likely sand yellow or gray-green or gray-brown - not so likely "panzer dark yellow" or "dunkelgelb"... undersides and parts of interiors could easily be left dark grey, and the sand yellow apparently often wore away, leaving the vehicle motley. Where chipping and wear occurred in the yellow coat(s), the underlying grey would be exposed.
Hope this helps!
Bob
