hello,
I'm thinking of a diorama :
an M4A1 is advancing past some defences of the siegfried line in early 45.
This will be for the "coverup campaign".
The M4A1 will be the italeri kit. I know that some M4A1s were still around at this time.
questions :
- should I paint my tank overall OD or could I use OD and black as a cammo (as was done in patton's army). I've seen the OD and black on many M4A3s but never on a M4A1...
- would an air ID flag have been used with the tank at that time ? I'm thinking of the bright orange flag spread over the back of the tank...
-are the italeri tracks so bad ? Should I replace them with AFV Club tracks ?

PenPen,
I have always loved this picture. Pretty much covers "Sherman on the Siegfried Line" doesn't it.
Hope you like it too...

In Squadron's In Action book, in the section on the M4A1 (76) there are a few pics of Camo'd tanks dated around July '44...

Definitely replace 'em, with anything. The kits tracks were the rubber block, which was rarely if ever seen on those (but someone will undoubtedly prove me wrong.)

In research myself (I'm building an M4A1 myself) I've found that most had the metal or rubber chevron tracks which were for better traction in the preceding winter. That said, By '45 if the M4A1 had the rubber chevrons, they could've been worn down to look like the rubber block tracks supplied in the kit. I also have the Italeri marines M4, which has the metal chevron tracks in the kit, and have used them on the M4A1... Great kits though! You can't go wrong for the price! (Unless you stuff up the winter whitewash numerous times like yours truly... #:-) )
