As you probably know in many of their recent PE sets Eduard include parts to upgrade M2 .50 machine gun. Everything looks great... except for ammo boxes. What are they? They look nothing like modern boxes. Currently I use parts from PE set for M923 Bigfoot truck, but I noticed that same ammo boxes are in other sets where Eduard included .50 gun parts. I also noticed that in one set that included details for M60 gun (was it a set for M151A1?...) there is a smaller version of the amo box, but still in the same strange style - with some embossing or something like that on all sides and with lid opening to the longer side (with hinges on the longer side of the box). Are these WWII style ammo boxes maybe?

Well, I think I found answer to my question.

Below is a photo of some resin WWII ammo boxes from Ultracast. They look more or less like these in Eduard sets.

That's very annoying - it would be much easier for Eduard to include correct modern ammo box, as it is simpler to do in PE, but nooooo... They've chosen to include some stuff that is completely useless for modern armor modeler

Depending on how 'modern' you want to be Pawel. WWII era cans remained in the system for some time afterwards. The newer cans were phased in over a period of time.

Kevin,

I generally don't build models older than Vietnam War era and my references show that newer style ammo boxes were used in Nam. I guess these old ones are good for Korea War, but were replaced - at least most of them - with new ones before Nam.

I know that now there are even newer .50 cal. ammo boxes in use than those from Vietnam and later period, so Eduard is two generations of boxes behind the real world...
