Hi everyone,
I'm going to shortly start building my first ever piece of Soviet armour (a Tamiya 1/35 T-55) and I have to admit to really looking forward to getting started. I'm considering either a straight forward build of a T-55A Soviet Naval infantry and would love to hear if anyone knows where I amay get the vehicle painted on flags. I think Tamiya modern Military decal sheets used to have a set but they look long gone. Possibly another option is a T-55AD with Drodz scratch conversion but there are only a few grainy images online and in the books I have manged to get only shoew vague images.
If anyone can help on either of these ideas I would be eternally grateful.
many thanks
Sean Lomas

Color options armored vehicles described in this article

Russian army flag was painted on front glacis
Russian tanks landed in Africa
Russian navy flag was painted on the front glacis
Maybe it won't difficult to hand paint the flag, or printing it on a white decal sheet
I hope this can halp you

Thanks Mauro, that is a real help. One thing that is of interest is that the colour plate is wrong. If you look at the Black and white image of the tank. Just behind the number is another naval flag on the side of the turret (looks like a lighter patch in the picture). I managed to get a clearer shot of this by taking a still from a youtube clip about Soviet Naval infantry that shows the flag quite clearly to the rear of the turret numbers. It will certainly make for a colourful T-55.
I'm at work now but when I get home I'll upload the still.
In that picture you sent I wonder what is on the canvas spotlight cover?
Many thanks for your help I really appreciate it.
Cheers

Hi Sean
I found other pics
It seems that sometime there are no flags and no insigna except the number and the tactical mark. In other examples flags are in 3 positions. One on the front glacis and two right below the turret handles. In these pics, turret flags maybe are hidden by the tarps.
Actually me too i wanted to depict a russian navy t-55 tank

Hi Mauro,
Wow now thats some set of photos you have. So it looks like the turret flags are on some but not others. I wonder why that is the case? Maybe its a date thing? Good on you for wanting to make one. Its a different look with the flags.
here is the image I promised

Who knows? Maybe is a matter of camouflage. During some kind of practices a rather big withe flag on the turret could be a problem.
Just my opinion anyway
Thanks for your pic

Hi Sean
Even if I'm not sure it will be really helpful, here are some T-55ADs fitted with the Drozd/Blackbird system (maybe you know them already ) :

Merci Frenchy!
I had not seen those pictures before. They are awesome and really
Makes me think about the T-55AD conversion again.
I guess the bits that never seem to make the image banks are the box
At the rear of the turret and detailed images of the pipes and boxes
Above the launchers.
Still I read they where navy tanks which is what I want.
Thanks for all your help.
cheers

Sean you were asking about the hood over the Luna light, it's a foul weather hood. It's basically a cover for the light with a window and a wiper. Mig productions has one in their Syrian T-55 conversion.

Hi Frenchy,
Now those are pics that I can build with. Thank you so much mate. I'm going to have to get another T-55 kit and build both versions I think. That should cover the T-55 on Naval service I guess?
Cheers

Hi Chris,
Many thaks for the picture. I reckon it looks pretty easy to scratch build. As long as you get the fron glass frame righ the rest looks like it could be built with a bit of milliput putty.
Cheers for all your help.

Thanks for those pictures Mauro. The colour one in the middle looks like a real mean tank. I am going to have to buy another T-55 for sure and make both versions.
Thanks for all tyour help mate. I think you may have helped launch me into this project.

If you're looking for naval flags you can easily find these on aviation decal sheets also as well as armour ones. As far as armour goes If I remember rightly these flags are on Trumpeters PT-76 sheets and BMP series.
However with aviation sheets even at 1/48 scale you could probably get flags big enough for the turret or front glacis.
Soviet Naval Aviation sheets are pretty common place in 1/48.

Yes Jon, that's true.... but on the tanks the flag is not "flat"...It's depicted while is waving
Sean
Considering that I have two pics, I think I'll do the "t-55 number 024".

Hi Mauro,
I think you are definately right about the flags and the only ones that you could find that even vaguley are around the right size (not) are the ones by begemot for the Sea Flanker in 1/48 scale.
I like your choice in tanks. I am going T-55A Soviet Navy for my build also and then I'll have a bash at the Drodz fitted tank afterwards. I may go for 135 from the still I got from youtube.
I just received my WWII productions T-55 resin track in the post and its some amazing track, perfectly detailed, all links are already seperate and just straight forward snap assembly. I put a few together it took me microseconds to do it.
Now just waiitng on the etch and I can get started!
take care

I very similar flag was painted also on russian navy Kamov ka 27
But buying a decal set just for an unperfect flag it could be quite a waste of money in my opinion
Hand painting the flag or printing it on a decal sheet, would be the best solution.
I'm waiting to see your work Sean
Cheers

Hi Sean...
as for the T-55AD with Drodz system, you might want to take a look at the UM Kit,
"UM232 T-55AD1 Soviet tank" which includes the Drodz system!!!
It's a very basic depiction of the system, but a good base for a little extra work...

Hi Orestis,
I actually saw one of them on ebay but could not find a review to show how 'basic' it was. In fact I had never heard of Unimodel before. If it provides the basics that will be good enough. The missle tubes looked to be the hardest to make from scratch but if there are some pre-formed that will do.
I'm going Navy T-55A first once my etch eventaully arrives. I found it really tough to get an eduard T-55 etch set for some reason. Apart from that already to go. I have even started painting my Alpines Tank figure for the hatch.
Thanks for the heads up mate.
Take care

Hi Sean
Maybe some sprues and instruction sheet pics would help you to make up your mind (looks to be the infamous Skiff kit.... in fact you can even see their logo on the sprues ) ?

Hey Frenchy now that is basic! I'm no Russian armour expert, not in the least but all the parts look very over simplified. Thank you so much for the link. I tried to find a review and drew a complete blank. Maybe I need to try harder!
Given that link it looks like scratch building would probably be the way to go.
I've scratch built projects before so I reckon it should not be too difficult. Just need to get those tubes right.
Cheers mate
