Hi all

Three days ago I bought on special offer this kit:

I've already downloaded quite a lot of Gaz-66 references , but unfortunately I wasn't able to find enough pics of "v" version (ГАЗ 66-В).

Can anyone help me to find other pics, links, or references?

At a first glance, the kit looks rather nice despite his very low price (...and the awful box-art...but it doesn't matter )
However I've already noticed that it will be necessary the wheels replacement ...

But aniway, has anyone of you already mounted this kit?

If so,do you have any advice about the kit (such as issues, tips and so on...)?

Thanks a lot in advance for any kind suggestions and replies

cheers

Eduard might still have a PE set for this kit, this is recommended. It's an OK kit, Wings and Wheels does a great reference.
I own one but I haven't started it.

Mauro, the Eduard set is useful, if only for the instrument panel and dials. Scratchbuilding skills are also useful

Well Kevin, to be honest I use PE parts when I can't substitute them with scratch works. For exemple it is most impossible (or incredibly hard) reproduce some kind of grills, so in that case I must use extra parts. But anyway most of the times, in my very humble opinion, PE parts are too "flat" to be realistic. Resin parts are more effective. Furthermore sometimes, as you know, it use at most the 60% of a PE set, and they often are quite expensive. Usually my "philosophy" is: "There are very few things which you can't reproduce with good references, copper wires, aluminium tape, brass sheets and plasticards, so let's work!" Maybe my models are not as accurate as they could be , but anyway, I think I'm more satisfied this way.
I can build panel and dials with a metal sheet a pinwise and a quarter of hour working on Photoshop

Anyway thanks a lot for the advice. Today maybe I'll go at my local hobby shop and I hope to find and see that set

I know from having seen them the NVA and Iraq used them. I would assume most Soviet satellite nations used them. If they were in Iraq, it would be logical to be used elsewhere in the Middle East. That's my hope anyway, as I have four of these for a Mitla Pass dio.
If you decide on a little variety, there's the Command Post version. I was surprised to find the rear unit was all vacu-formed, but it dowesn't look bad, and with a few extra details, should look good. Especially as most of it will be be burnt out.

Matt Robert

Thanks a lot for our replies

Actually (to be honest I don't know when I've been too busy... ), I want to depict a russian exemplar.
I'd like to know the countries which used the "Gaz 66 V", to widen my internet researches. I usually look for references not just in english but also putting in the google bar nouns and definitions written in original langages.
I know for sure that hungarian army and maybe czech, had the GAZ 66, but I really don't know if they had the V version. I've already found some NVA pics but they don't represent the airborne truck.
It could be really interesting indeed, doing a "commando version", but that would mean to take a rather big scratch work.
Actually I have a lot of unfinished projects, I'd prefere an easier build...

Cheers thanks again

Back when I was growing up in Beirut and during the civil war between '75 and '82 I remember seeing many of them being used by the Syrian army as troop carriers... also the PLO and Mourabitoun and other factions used many of them with the ZU-23 AA gun...

this one here, also by Eastern Express and which I have in my stash waiting...

Looking forward to seeing your build

that's a cool looking truck indeed and with the way these kind of trucks find themselves being used for years i could see using them in some fun scenarios. i will have to keep an eye out for this kit as well though i am not allowing myself to buy any new kits until i finish the ones i have.

maybe if it's depicted as a wreck you can just skip using the tires all together.

please keep us posted on the build. cheers, bd.

Thanks for the encouraging words Bruce, I really wish.

I've been getting quite frustrated with my hobby recently

I have a stash full of models and too little time

The result is that I' ve been wasting a lot of money buying kits and stuffs which I can't even start

Anyway existential crisis aside, I hope I'll be able to do something very soon

Thanks again

Cheers

Here's a set of wheels for the GAZ-66 from a Russian store (Which I never ordered from before, so I have no idea if their service is good or not)

http://www.ruscale.ru/product/545-a025-zil-157-btr-152-gaz-66-i-td/

I did want to try and order from them, but they don't take credit card transactions... only money orders and things like that - which is a problem for me here in Egypt.

So anyway.. does anyone know what other AM company makes a set of wheels for the GAZ-66?

Thanks
