I have recently come into posession of ICM's Armies of the World Russian figs(Cold War era). On the box it shows their uniforms as being bright green, but no indication of the actual color. I've found Cold War era uniforms in khaki searching Google. In short, what color were the Cold War uniforms? Thanks.

You might find what you are looking for here:

The Cold War era camo is from the second row down. Click on the camo to see a bigger picture and some info.

Good luck,

Matt,

Depending on the source, the color of of cold-war era Soviet army uniforms is referred to as either "olive" or "khaki drab". This applies to both field uniforms and dress uniforms for enlisted ranks. Officers wore "Tsar Green" parade uniforms but otherwise wore the olive/khaki drab uniforms of the enlisted ranks when in the field.

In Afghanistan, the uniforms often faded to a very pale khaki or sand color. Here's an example of the summer field dress uniform used in that conflict, typically by the Motor Rifle Troops:

Here's an example of the "Tsar Green":

A couple of good sources from Osprey are "Russia's War in Afghanistan" , Men-at-Arms #178, and "Inside the Soviet Army Today", Elite Series #12. I picked these up several years ago when I had planned to do some figures from the Afghanistan conflict, but which I still haven't yet gotten around to.

Hope this is helpful.

ProfessorP, thank you. I was afraid that I would have to repaint the uniforms, but this confirms what I have found.
I made add a camo pattern, but I intend to build a depot of the Russian army; so solid colors would be more likely.

Just FYI if you do choose to do camo uniforms: the most common camo pattern used during the Afghanistan conflict had a base color of "grass green" with "sand" splotches. It wouldn't have been the same color as the field dress uniform's khaki drab. I'm sure you could find an example over at camopedia.com .

ProfessorP: camopedia just refers me out to other sites. It is a vendor web crawler.
