Hi andy:
Well, I suppose you could call spackle a couple different things. Here in the US it can be called joint compound, or wall repair compound. If you go back to home depot, you may find the stuff you need in the same area you would find the drywall supplies. Hope this helps.

If you get a hole in a wall and need to fix it ... or just to fill cracks or drilled holes after something that has been removed, this is the stuff for the job. It comes in a tube already ixed, you just squeeze it out and use it or it comes in a box as powder and you mix with water. Both are handy for modelling. The powdered version comes in a hobby version, used in casting sets where molds of disney type characters are provided and then mixed with water you fill the molds and then paint the formed figure. This stuff is great for walls. Mold a square (from popsicle sticks on a glass base) and then scribe stone work and bricks. Can be cut to required shape. The tube stuff is great as its easily worked onto areas, can be smoothed out with a palett knife or equivelent and textured with a damp sponge. takes 24 hours to dry so theres a good working time. Seems to be called something different in every country. Hardwall, spackel, gips, polyfilla, etc.

There's actually two types... one is a vinyl wall compound, and the other is regular joint compound. The vinyl spackle doesn't shrink, which is why it is used for repairs. The regular joint compound is what builders use to smooth out the joints between sheetrock panels and around corners. Either will work for our purposes, though I find that regular joint compound works better for me. You can also use Pollyfilla which is a similar compound that often comes in dry form and you mix up. Look for products made by Dow, Dapp, or Lepage.
