Apparently, PE35417 "Modern USMC M1A1 TUSK1 Abrams Basic FOR DRAGON 3535" set is not pictured..Too bad they don't take time to post separate pics of each set...

I got excited when they announced PEA258 awhile ago which contains the BRE's

Here are photos of set PE35417 on the voyager site
http://www.voyagermodel.com/productdetails.asp?itemid=PE35417

The photos seem to show something going on around the infantry phone area but not 100% sure?

I had a talk with Mike Mummey the other day. I think he can better explain why it looks the way it does.

Howdy everyone, I went to Voyagers website and checked out PE set # 35417 for the USMC M1A1. There is a whole lot of stuff in the set that the USMC has not purchased/fielded or is currently in service. However the items that are great to see offered is the M257 8 shot smoke grenade launchers. The other items of use are the BRE(Bustle Rack Extension), TI Phone, External Slave Start Receptacle(above TI Phone), DUKE IED Antennas and the Loaders MG shield. In one of the photos it appears the Belly Armor is also included. With the above mentioned items you could replicate a current USMC M1A1 in A-Stan. You will also need to source the BFT (Blue Force Tracker) antenna and mount seen to the right of the GPS (Gunners Primary Sight) "Dog House".

The USMC does not use currently use the CSAMM(Counter Sniper Anti-Material Mount) .50 cal above the main gun or the turret top small arms protection shields to the front and left of the Loaders station.

Voyager needs to make the DWFK (Deep Water Fording Kit) Engine Exhaust elbow seen mounted to the center rear grille area. It would look really nice in metal. The Dragon styrene version from the earlier kit is kinda chunky. The Loaders MG shields used in Iraq were also the earlier MCTAGS (Marine Corps Transparent Armored Gunshield). The items mentioned above will be great for a current in the 'Stan' build. I will be looking for those M257 8 shot smoke grenade launchers either way. And remember there are two types of M1A1s in USMC service, those in Afghanistan and the rest. Outta here, Mike sends . . .

now that's much better... as mike puts it, the smoke dischargers really look the part, also the BRE and DUKE antennas appear to be nicely done...
looks like I'll have to get one of these ASAP...

Howdy Max, looking more closely at the PE 35417 pictures the TCs .50 cal thermal sight is also in the set. That piece will let you build a Jarhead Abrams in Iraq late 06' to March 09' when the tanks left.

OK, youse guys make my head hurt with all this jargon and abbreviations....

I found the DML 3535 one of the finest kits I've ever built, and I'm the son of Lt. Col Wm. Cross, Jr. USMC-RET (deceased), so I'd be tempted at another jarhead build. But I'm an Axis armor guy, and don't know which of these many sets to purchase (and Voyager ALWAYS breaks them up into sub-sets, which makes me crazy).

So for the ignorant here like me, which of these sets (and what other AM stuff) do I need to get to build an A-stan USMC M1A1???

Howdy Bill C., attempting to decipher the Voyager website and PE sets. It appears to me that you would need PE35417 USMC M1A1 (and not need all of it) and PEA 258 BRE(Bustle Rack Extension). You will still need to source the BFT antenna and mount (from one of their HUMVEE sets?). And of course the Fording kit exhaust elbow attached to the rear grille door from an older Dragon USMC Abrams. Honestly they reproduce a bunch of kit parts in brass that are just fine in styrene. It would be nice if they would offer the Belly Armor, TI Phone, Slave Recptacle box, DUKE IED Antennas, M257 8 Shot Smoke Grenade Launchers, BRE, TCs CWS Thermal sight and Loaders MG shield as a seperate kit.

Hey Mike, I'd really love to but for some weird reason I'm still busy with three more OIF1 abrams
Bill, the BFT antenna is included in dragon's M1A1 AIM Kit... if you'd need the snorkel adapter I think I have a spare one somewhere...
also the current A-stan versions have an ubrella mount. basically the same used on aussie abrams' as far as the tusk parts go I'd recommend either the PSM od the Legends tusk1 sets for ease of asssembly (I'd always prefer resin over PE)

Howdy Max, you just saved me from buying a HUMVEE set just for the BFT antenna. I need to wear my reading glasses more and dive in and build one of those pigs instead of just looking at the sprues. I have a AAVR7-A1 to finish up first. I look forward to seeing more of your Marine Abrams builds too. Outta here, Mike sends . . .

Max, Legends has two TUSK I sets (1177 & 1185). Which one?

If you have an extras, I'd be happy to pay the shipping.

Bill,

1177 is for DML's and 1185 is for Tamiya's.
DML's M1A1 AIM and M1A2 SEP are the BEST Abrams avail.

Hola Nick, where you been hiding? Where is all that stuff you were developing? I need a MCTAGS for an OIF 07' build.

The AIM kit is one of the best kits PERIOD.

Very well-done, goes together well, the only drawback is the Magic Tracks (aren't very detailed). I subbed the Bronco tracks and was happy with the results.

The Dragon M1A1 AIM is on sale at Lucky Model for about $48.00, shipping included. Is this a good price?

Howdy Russ, shipping included price sounds good. It will take awhile for it to show up so if you do not mind the wait no worries. Squadron has it in stock and on sale for $39.51 plus shipping($8-$10?) to Planet Ootah:
http://www.squadron.com/ItemDetails.asp?item=DR3535
Probably have your paws on it in 5-7 days.

That's a fair price. I've seen them on eBay for $30-$35 with shipping variable.

There's one right now for $15. Oops, it's up to $20 with 9 mins left.
