I'm currently working on a Sheridan that I would like to make as a REFORGER vehicle. My question involves the periscopes. Are they multicoated like the periscopes that you see on current vehicles or are they like WW2 periscopes (ie should the lenses appear black from the outside or the modern "golden.)? I have TM9-2350-2310-12 but the last update is from 1975 and it doesn't say. I would like to make it as a late vehicle.
TIA

They should look magenta/purple.

The last photo shows the violet glazing. I wonder about the rest, they look like replacements.

The last pic looks like a reflection of someone outside (or possibly inside), not the laser coating seen on modern AFVs. I don't believe the reddish laser coating was added until the late '80s or early '90s. I'm not sure any Sheridan ever had them. I would go with black periscopes coated with clear green and a couple coats of clear gloss on top.

I will tell you unequivocally that they did not have laser coatings. Here's a photo of one of the last surviving servicable Sheridans. No coating.
I wouldn't even go with the green look. In my mine that's more for the see through glass in older cupolas.

Cool and thanks. This confirms what I remember about the 3rd ACR M551s that I used to see.

I drove a Sheridan in the 11th ACR in Germany 77-78 and they did not have any laser coatings on the periscopes. The laser was not eye safe and I don't believe it ever worked on our track. We never used it for gunnery. So make the scopes like WW2 ones.

19D here, HHT 11 ACR and 1/11 ACR C troop. Fulda......I can't remember the name of that bar at the bottom of the hill, with the juke box that always was playing the same 3 songs...LOL. Nice place.....and a lotta nice girls.....how how how how.
I have a pair of Sheridans I want to incorporate into a dio with some M113s during the Cambodia invasion. The M113 have to have the float thing on front...I can't remember the names of anything some times.
I do have a very interesting picture of a Sheridan from B troop with dual 50 cals on the TCs cupola. I tried to get in touch with the guy to see if he has more pictures but could not. In blue it says Peace Pipe on the barrel and "the stalking rhino" on the dual 50 gun shield.

I went thriugh Knox as an 11D but got picked fot Sheridan school, Don't know how. I wanted to be a tanker but got talked into 11D at MEPPS. So I figured close enough I'll take it. We turned in the 551s for M60A1s about 8 months into my tour. Been a tanker ever since.
Border Cav can be a rough tour but Reb I salute you for your service.
I don't recall the name of the bar either was Will beer still the local brew?
I hated guard duty at the ammo site. Can you believe OP Alpha is a museum now.

I was not a big beer drinker until I tasted the German beer. They had EKU there, I liked the Weiss beer. When I came home I drank a Bud and spit it out...
The name of the place is on the tip of my tongue...errrrrr......the stairs to the second floor was on the side. When we came out of the field it was either there or go to Frankfurt.
Outpost Alpha, all the rabbits at night through my night vision goggles...LOL...just sitting in the snow looking at nothing. A museum.....all I remember is around the clock duty and the refueling station not far from the gate. I never was in one of those towers.
I got it!!!!!! Andreasburg or something like that, the name of the bar. My body is gone from a spinal injury but at least a little of my mind is left. Wow now I remember Helen too.....from Sweden.
Oh snap this is supposed to be about the M551 Sheridan at reforger, sorry.....when you get older it becomes a lot about the past. I'm 54 and feel about 80.

I remember EKU but I loked WILL beer better. Love Weiss beer, still drink the imported stuff. After I read the name I can almost see the place on the corner. I never did go upstairs there down town I'll never tell. Oh the red light district of Frankfurt I pulled an entire tour in the tower what a pain. 8 on 16 off. I was on REFORGER 78 in an M60 the 551s were gone. But I saw them on the RED TEAM as well as M60A2s.

Seem like a couple of vehicles in the same unit had the twin .50 cal setup. As far as I know it was M551s from Tp. B, 1st. Sqd., 11th. ACR around 1969. A drawing appear in Osprey Vanguard no. 42 Armour of the Vietnam Wars and two photos in Tanks Ill. no.6 Tank War Vietnam. This vehicle have twin .50 for the commander and twin M73 for the loader. I remember seeing a few photos of other vehicles as well. Tried to find the veterans page of B Troop but the link is dead. PM me and I'll see if I can help you out.

"The memories of a man in his old age are the deeds of a man in his prime."---Pink Floyd
Being a Cold War-era armour fan I once made some changes to the chorus of High Hopes (again Pink Floyd):
The olive drab was greener
The camouflage was sharper
The tanks were casted
The guns were rifled
With foes surrounded
The Iron Curtain dividing
The REFORGERs yearly
The endless Cold War
Forever and ever
Cheers,
