Super review, Jan. This will definitely be put on my wish list. I've seen some pictures of these trucks and they seem to come in a number of body styles. One had a small antiaircraft gun on the back and another had the little Pak mounted behind the cab. Do you really think that Dragon might release versions like that? I just wish they had more interesting painting versions other than basic grey.

Hi!

Just "FYI" on the possible color-schemes for this truck: Yes, I would have to agree that the plain gray scheme alone is a lean offering, as this vehicle and its gun were originally produced and served in the "Buntfarbenanstrich" era, and of course also served in Poland, where typical colors were the brown on gray scheme. So we do have realistic painting options! Just seems that the Dragon folks may be a little color-phobic or something!

Personally, I dream of Dragon getting around to the Krupp in 1/35 - and there are several options for folks to kit, including variations on the "gun tractor / prime mover" version, the personnel carrier (here), and various known field-mods with mounted guns (that 3.7cm AT, Flak 30 and Flak 38 2cm AA guns are all documented) that could sell well, or so I think. Considering that the old Tamiya kit gets good prices... I just cannot wait, though, and have one of those with a Flak 30 thing going right now.

But, IMO, this little kit, and its prime-mover brother, are pretty cool little gems!

@AJB - Glad if the review helped you make a decision. As for colours, while I don't have a huge library of photo books there should be plenty of options besides the limited ones in the kit. I have seen pictures of this truck painted in various schemes from mud slopped on it to a yellowish colour in North Africa. There is also the pre or early war camo that Bob suggested and I saw a picture of one in a museum in Berlin that was sand overall with green and red-brown splotches.

@panzerbob01 - Thanks for looking in and sharing your comments. It truly is a great little kit.

As for other variants, I am in no position to know. All I can say is that Dragon isn't opposed to using parts from previous kits to create new versions. However, in this case I would say that you might end up with a lot of spare parts from the way the main sprue is laid out. Then again, can we ever really know!

You and me both. My heart lept there for a moment. Looks quite detailed for a 1/72 kit ... but I havent built one of these for more than 12 years, and they were old Airfix kits. Would love to see this built up ....

I see that Military Modelling mag are offering this kit as a freebie to new subscribers and billing it as "for the first time in 1:72". Strictly speaking that is true, but of course it is the same subject as the Matchbox / Revell 1:76 kit.

Anyway, relieved to see that the law of conversion / scratching hasn't applied in this case as it did to me recently on another subject: I have a half completed burn out of this vehicle from the Matchbox kit for which I scratched an engine and bonnet / hood - relieved to see here that Dragon have moulded the arches and bonnet in one piece and presumably there is no engine??

[b]@Plasticbattle[b] - Frank, i too "cut my teeth" on Airfix kits and I think that it goes without saying that many of these new small scale kits are getting considerably advanced as far as details go. The old Matchbox was a definite step up from the original Airfix but Dragon and many other manufacturers leave them in the dust. I will definitely be doing a blog on this one in the future.

[b]@firstcircle[b] - Actually Matthew, ICM produced both the Kfz. 70 and a Kfz. 69 in 1/72. From looking at the plans on the Henk of Holland site it appears that they had a partial engine.

As for this kit, the engine compartment is free and clear. However, the thickness of the plastic in the cab moulding is just that, thick.

One other point that might be of interest is that Dragon did not provide a Notek light with their kit. I am no expert but might this not imply that this is a earlier production model?

Phew... only the bottom fortunately, so OK for a turned-over vehicle, but once again the bonnet top and mudguards are in one piece.
