In response to the Favorite Armor Brand thread, who are YOUR favorite manufacturers and why?

Personally, tied in first place are MiniArt and Masterbox.

Why? In the case of the former, the imagination and technical ability. Who else would DARE to bring out French Tankers in 1/35th scale?

In the case of Masterbox, the same. Superb animation also added.

As I know the people involved in BOTH companies, that perhaps is another factor. The enthusiasm of these people is second-to-none, their preparedness to LISTEN to suggestions is also impressive.

So who, and importantly WHY?

Are we talking 1/35 scale plastic or resin... or both?

I would say the best resin figures on the market today are from Evolution and Bravo6. Both companies are run by sculptors with amazing sense of anatomy, posing and balance/animation... the best thing is that not one of Evolution or Bravo6 releases is "boring" no matter what the subject is. Most of the the figures from those two companies are designed to be used with AFVs, so they have amazing appeal to both figure painters and armor modelers.

As far as plastic is concerned, #1 Dragon; #2 Tamiya; #3 ICM. I base this on the level of detail as well as the fit of the pieces.

Allright, I like this kind of trend.

In Plastic, N°1 is Miniart, n°2 Masterbox (just behind Miniart). Third would be Zvezda.
Why ?
Miniart developped a very interesting range of figures, buildings and vehicles/guns/tanks/soft. They are at an affordable price. They do believe, and they are right, that something else than german kit can sell, and they are damn right.
Their figures are soft plastic, but with some talent you can make them as little jewels. Their soviet sailor set was amazing in this respect, like thgeir Bantam series. the faces of their figure is frankly to the level of resin manufacturer, and the best faces you could find in 1/35 plastic. Their wodeen barrel and furniture sets is really welcomed (only preiser were doing one in plastic before), like their cart, and shells.
They keep their price low
And they release a LOT of Kits, very regularly, each of them being a surprise, something original. Don't you have seen, there is a new kit of German panzer crew on their site. Regarding another post I answered on Dragon figure, this panzer crew set really blows those loosy Dragon figure. This Miniart set IS original (accordeon, open jacket, poses, uniform).

Masterbox. I love their range of figures, they really bring 1/35 plastic figures as a category itself, which doesn't need any AFV and which could compete with white metal or resin 54mm. They really explore in any possible way action poses and diorama sets. But they also fill gaps that has never been treated before (except by Preiser, again) like civilian sets and farm animals like cows. I think I've never seen so imaginative sets in 1/35 before. Although three things pushed me to place them second. First they should improve a little the quality of their castings/sculpting. For me this is a fact that figures head are not to the level of Miniart ones. Secondly, some of their set are innacurate. I've bought their last set on US paratroopers in Normandy. The subject/interaction between figure is marvellous. But there are innacurracies in the uniform (sort of lace under paratrooper boots that I've never seen before) and it lacks details/equipments. Paratroopers in Normandy were geared with heavy and complex equipments, whereas masterbox figures are a little too much simple. Last thing, Masterbox tends to make false advertising : at the back of the set they represent enhanced figures with photoshop, and the bowart sometimes does not correspond to the content of the set. Sometimes it's in consumer favor (for example in the paratrooper set mentioned above, you get additional sprue coming from previous cart set), but usually consumers doesn't like to be fooled. Beware of this trend Masterbox.

Zvezda. The quality of Zvezda is irregular, but they do have excellent 1/35 figure set. Usually their russian soldiers set are tremendous, and their equivalent german one are just crappy. I don't know why,, nationalism maybe ? . Some of their very good sets are soviet snipers, soviet moutain troops, soviet tank hunter.
The other companies are far behind.

In resin, my ranking is n°1 Bravo 6, n°2 Minisoldiers n°3 Alpine.
Bravo 6 : for the moment Vladimir D. only concentrates on Vietnam area. But just around that he came out with super figures, full of action, sometimes humour, a very nice casting and a lot of details. His figures can be used on a stand alone basis, in figure diorama, or along with AFV. Keep Vlad, you're mastering the business !
Minisoldier : I must say the quality of sculpting is breathtaking. The WW2 paratrooper serie set up their gear before boarding is just waouh.. Those figure doesn't interact although.
Alpine : alpine figure design is just really sweat. Ther are not thousands of details, but everything is extremely well proportionated, and the casting is the best resin I've seen. But Hey Taesung, make us more action poses, for a change. I know You don't like that, but why not give it a try ?

Voilà voilà

My first for figures is masterBox now, second is D.M.L. and though I have not recieved any yet, third would be MiniArt. When I get my MiniArt figures they may well take first with me. Just love the looks, and the write ups are always good. I build ving's and most of my figures in stock are D.M.L. At the time I started, resin was too much cost wise and the sets they had were great. Some of the older sets are pretty rough but the newer ones are also pretty good as far as I'm concerned. The equipment choice with them is great but the posses are stiff and unanimated unless it is a set of axis figures. This is where MasterBox is going to pull ahead. Thier sets are really dio's in themselves. And besides, Allied sets are selling along with civilian sets and D.M.L. just doesn't seem to figure this out. I know there are people who are German armor and figure nuts, but to disregard the sales possabilities for us allied and civilian dio builders is dumb, unless that's what they want to specialize in. And the lack of P.T.O. sets is disturbing. Though D.M.L. has four sets of marines/ one of Japanese, and MasterBox has it's three combined sets, what else is there. Some more P.T.O. troopers and civilian/native sets would be a very welcome addition to the modeling world. Chinese, Indian, Burmes, Dutch, French, ect.

For plastic I have to say that MiniArt and Masterbox if for no other reason than the impressive subject matter and poses. The ingenuity these two companies have been putting forth in the world of 1/35 figures is just outstanding. I would like to see some WWI and modern figures from these companies as well, but if they currently only have the resources to focus one one time period then WWII was the right way to go.

As far as resin goes, I would have to say Alpine, Evolution, and Tank. I have never been disappointed with the quality or detail of any of the figures from any of these companies regardless of scale.
I have to say that I really like the Masterclub and BRAVO 6 figures as well, but I haven't ever worked on one so I can't really offer a true opinion one way or the other.

BTW and just on a side note, I think it's interesting that none of of my favorite armor companies aside from MiniArt made it on my list here. I wonder if that's normal?

MiniArt, keep it up guys!

I can´t knock MasterClub or MiniArt for their poses and imaginative figures. They´re great. But my favourite injected figures are still Tristar. My preference is decided on paintability and how nice they are to paint. Very refined detail, yet always enough releif to be able to paint it easily. The two companies already mentioned loose out here... big time ... in comparison. Some folds in the clothes are so big they would be larger than a hand in scale. Not nice to paint such deep folds either!
Ive not had a chance yet to paint some of those newer resin brands mentioned already, but from what I have worked with, Alpine are the bees knees!

1st In plastic, MiniArt for their Creative range and long over due additions to the British Commonwealth options.

2nd & 3rd MB for similar reasons and DML for the occasional British Set.

1st In Resin - Resicast both their old and new range and particularly for their British kit and amazing detail.

2nd Friends for the courage to save and add to the old Jakrei range of RN Sailors.

3rd - all other AM manufacturers who add to the Commonwealth range , noteably Ultracast and the occasional class figure from Accurate Armour.

As far as plastic figures go it has to be MiniArt and MasterBox in equal first place. Their figure detail and overall usability is very good and combined with the animation in the figures make them both number 1 in my book. Both of these companies do tend to not include all the needed equipment on occasion, but each set of figures is usually better than the last.

3rd place is also a draw for me with DML and their excellent weapons detail included in some kits, but they do not exhibit much in the way of imagination as regards pose. Zvezda is my second choice for third place purely because some of their figure sets are little gems such as their Russian snipers set.

Resin figures for me is a toss up between Alpine for pure attention to detail, and Tank for their range and animation. This is subject to change as I have ordered some Legend figures which look promising judging by pictures online.

For resin figures, I'd say Legends are probably my favourite since they've been releasing a steady stream of excellent modern US figures. Im also a big fan of the Alpine miniatures modern AFV crew as they are very well sculpted and cast.

For plastic figures, I quite like DML, and Im particularly partial to some of their older sets: US sniper team, SBS with kayak etc, since these are truly unique subjects at an affordable price and are actually pretty decent figures.

Is this a thread a manufacturer requested, or just personal curiosity, Jim?

MasterBox and MiniArt, also ICM. And Zvezda, when they weren't popping out Italeri zombies, they were awesome. Always have been. In fact, some of Italeri's specialty releases look to have the Zvezde touch (the figures in their Miaile, for example)

Tamiya's are crude. Dragon's are overengineered, and Italeris are a laugh.

Tristar's figures are good too

Historex figures were gorgeous in their day but have been superceded by the Ukrainians.
Some of FineMolds personality figures were good.

AFV Club's parent HobbyFan's are excellent resin
Verlinden's early figures are outstanding, but their later ones are straight out of Dr.Who.
Kirin's were nice.
Alpine is the current superstar, I believe.
Hornet and Wolf, the benchmark.
I could go on.... very few resin companies do bad figures, the only one I can think of is Yanks, haven't seen much of their new stuff (assuming they have any) but their old figures were enormous, more like 1:32. Moulding wasn't great, but in the 1990s one took what one could get.

Without a doubt, I would say Master Box and Miniart. They put out such nice sets and are not all ate up with more Germans. We can look to these two companies for some real variety instead of the same old ration of bread and water over and over again....................................Al

I would suggest that if a manufacturer does look at this thread it will be MasterBox and MiniArt that will be pleased with what they read.

I'll have to try MiniArt and Masterbox. I've been meaning to but haven't yet, as I'm still waiting for the US tankers that were promised a while ago. My only experience is with Dragon and Tamiya. The former have good detail on the figures and the Gen 2 weapons are excellent, but individual gear is too flat. I'll love anyone who does good, useful PTO subjects in plastic, especially if they dared to do a set of five or six figures in a box.

In plastic I would say Miniart and Masterbox in terms of choice of figures and animation. A big plus in their favour is that pouches and other gear is made to fit to the individual figure which is not the case with Dragon. Like Frank I have a soft spot for Tristar.

In resin in terms of imagination and ideas Evolution, Stalingrad and Bravo-6 top the list for me, Masterclub figures are also top notch.

In plastic, I like Masterbox with their interesting subjects, the molding and detail are very good. I havn't tried Miniart yet, from I have seen in comments, I will have to try Miniart.. I have used a few DML, but they are not as crisply molded as Masterbox.

In resin, I have used Alpine, Dougs Originals and Tank. Alpine is number one as far as I concerned with Dougs a close second. I have been doing DAK figures so my selection tends to go with what DAK figures are available.
