I'm tempted to make a diorama that shows ice. ICE.

- Does anyone have experience with this ?
- Would it be a nice idea to do a diorama campaign/ group build on the subject ? We could add ice as an X-factor for an already scheduled campaign. Maybe make this a voluntary X-factor (Y-factor ?) since not everyone wants this degree of complexity.

Suggestions ?

I once saw a dio which had ice cones that were made from transparant streched sprue.

Perhaps, since already seem to know Voss-chemie, you could experiment with transparant polyester resin??

Ice would be a COOL X-Factor. The campaign docet is filling up quick - I'd put in an official request as soon as 10 people show interest.

As far as execution - wax is so far the way to go. On ML there is a tiger who broke through ice.
I think Envar did a small tankette churning out of some ice and I wanna say he used wax too.
I've got links at work - I'll post'em later.

Abou this ice business. Number 1 stay away from the Woodlands Scenics stuff you melt to make water. Number 2, since no one answered my request about making waterfalls, I bought almost every type of "Golden" brand gel, paste and medium (gloss and matte, pourable to high solids) and intend to just flat out experiment with them for water, waterfalls, ice, etc. with and without color (white, ble, etc.) If it isn't a total disaster, I'll post it for everyone else to learn frm my mistakes.

I saw an excellent feature on ice at ML I think it was. It showed a tiger slipping through some ice on a river. The maker had cast a layer of white tinted clear resin about a half inch thick. then he took a hammer and broke it into large chunks. He built the base and the damn around the base for casting. He placed the model then poured in layers of clear resin. In the last layer he imbedded the chunks of white resin at odd angles and layed some flat around the edge. The effect was simply spectacular. I will try to find the link.

Rob

Update - It was Mig Jimenez, and it still impresses me:

OK Buddies,

Who's signing up for a "campaign on ice", starting in September 2004 ?

I suggest a rather small diorama, minimum postcard size (10 x 15 cm) to maximum letter size (21 x 30 cm).
There has to be Ice in it.

The rest is open for discussion. Maybe just maximum three figures, vehicles allowed but not essential. Timing WWII, somewhere in Europe ?

How does that taste ?

I recommend this book to any modeler who wants to create bases for models. It has an in-depth step by step article on how to make a waterfall. Worth every penny.

On a side note, the Ice thing sounds cool. I'm in.

Goose,

I wish , no it is a Diorama made by Charles Reading.

If you go to my website (click banner) and to the tips section, then you can see a description on how to make the Ice.

BTW, some thumbnaild don't seem to work, but the articles and corresponding pictures do

Woodland Scenics Realistic Water and candle parafin in action.
I just poured the hot wax straight from the candle on the dio and mixed it quickly with a toothpick to get shattered effect. This technique goes well for thin ice. The snow on ice is hairspray plus food soda and baby powder.
