I thought I would build somthing a bit weard. Now I'm not going to build it just like the real photo. I'm going to build it as if it had bean used in war. Place and time for my version: Odessa Russia 1942.


Kit's used: Tamiya: Schwimmwagen Type 166 and ESCI SdKfz 7 w/2cm Flak
Photo-Etch used: NA
Paint used:Tamiya and Testors for the base color.
Weathering pigments: Alphacolor Solft Pastels and RUSTALL #4 mud.

Well here we go!


Here my starting work.

I had to do some more to the view port or periscope. The scope in the photo is nothing like that of the kit.


The kit were I got the gun is an old ESCI kit. note the view port is a box shape and not right.


Now here's the fixed scope.


I only added a wire running form the horn to the body.

Just to let you know the picture you refer to is a well known fake, so not a "real photo".

From a physical and structural point of view the Schwimmy wouldn't have been capable of taking the load or the stresses during firing.

Fake or not, I agree with Caveman and the photographer(s)/editor that it's cool! I know that little tin vehicle would flip right over, but it looks tough.
CCIII- have you seen the "What If" Campaign (#2)? I'm sure Jeremy would be glad to have you in that with this! I just finished an entry for that, and I'm considering going back again.

Yep It's a true fack and I don't care, Like windysean said. I have yet to see this what if section. So I'll ask and see what the starter has to say.
A bit more work.

I see the What if forum is a stand alone forum not a Group build. I would hat to start a new post wile this one is on-going.. It would haveto be up to the Armorama Staff to move my posts to the what if section.


I know I pointed out that I was not going to us any PE but I wanted to add a radio to my vehicle.

What a great project, when I first saw the photo I thought for a second wow the Germans were really struggling for ideas for mobile AAA, and then that cant be right lol.

If only the Schwimmwagen in Gran Turismo 5 came with a Flak 30 that would be awsome.

I played around with th placement of the radio.

Here's some items I'm adding. Not every thing will go, I'm only going to use what I like.

The Idea for mounting the MG an it's ammo on the came from a Hanomag.


This is it as it stands, I'm not done yet.

I think it need's a more earthy feel. So I used a 50/10% thinned body color to fade the green paint blobs, as well as fade the decals. It need's more.....


Some of the items in this photo will be used to give it a more earthy look. Idea: Ken Burke, Founder of "Spruebender".


Once it's dryed a bit I'll give it a good rubbing! An tell you all why.

Umm, how about some ammo for that 20mm...

Yes your right I do need to add the ammo boxies for the 20mm.

Caveman, I can always count on you to walk the road less traveled. This configuration would work for firing if you add a 'foot' where the propeller is on the back. This gun weighs about 800 pounds, the weight would show on the back springs. But if it's supported properly it could fire prone from the back of a Schwimmwagen.

Seeing that I'm doing weathering right now, I don't think I'm going to add any thing that may mess with the work that I have already done.


The only things I'm going to add to the body that will not mess with my weathering work is the ammo and rear view mirror, that I just found!


This is as it stands to day, with out the parts I need to add.


I now think I should do some weathering to the wind screen. It looks to clean.

Seeing that my idea of this unit being use in Russia, late years. Would mean that it would drive through really muddy spots. So like any vehical with dryed mud on them. Driving through high brush would rub some of the dryed mud off. SO I tryed to give the vehicle a rubbed look, when it came to that mud.
Any way "lukiftian" you have a realy good Idea that I will use when I make my base. I'm thinking of making some type of burm behind the vehicle. When that time come's, I'll let you all know in this post./but for now let me just get this baby done.

One question, what do you use the tinactin for? I know us modelers can forget our personal hygiene when we get deep into a project but I usually keep mine in the bathroom

LOL "Love that hygiene pun" I have no problems with my hygiene man. Using "talcum powder" is an old modelers trick to help make mud thicker.
As you can see I didn't need it. An like I said some of the items in that photo would be used.

ah, gotcha. So use it instead of plaster or in addition to?

"Caveman"(tells): any mud colored acrylic paints,dry earthtone pastels, ect...
In addition mini of those acrylics would be custom mixed.
