Hi all,

I've just uploaded a new video about repainting an old model, straight oer the top of an existing paintjob using the new Vallejo coloured primers.

These primers have been reviewed here on the site, but I was so impressed I made a video about what they can do and also show a few other things on there too for the beginners.

The video's here:

all the best

Jon, I've tried to purchase those primers from Sprue Brothers, but they always seem to be out of stock, so I'm still using Tamiya's Grey lacquer primer, which I consider to be an excellent product other then for it being toxic. All other acrylic primers are just about useless for paint adhesion qualities, especially the Model Master primer.

I was impressed with the fact that you didn't have to thin the paints for use with a fine needle setup. And that's something that I have to do with either Model Master or Tamiya acrylics when stepping down from a #3 needle/cone/tip to a #1 setup for my Paasche 1H air gun.

Hi Joel,

you can get these primers from Creative Models (google them up) who I believe stock the full range.

I find I rarely have to thin Vallejo stuff, but when I need to spray a very fine pattern I have been using their glaze medium - it keeps the paint flowing really nicely. I have used the vallejo AIR series for pretty much everything I've painted in the last 2 years and I'd never go back to another brand as I'm so comfortable with them but different airbrushes need different paint mixes so I do get a lot of messages about thinning.

I have recently broken my Iwata which had a nice "intermediate" nozzle for all round painting, and I never had to thin anything to spray through it. Moving to the thinner nozzle I am not experiencing any troubles so far, but I am airbrushing some graffiti at the moment on a model train and for this the glaze medium has proven itself to work as a thinner of sorts. I've been airbrushing pen-thin lines with it.

Using a toxic substance is unpleasant but I know those "hot" primers are excellent for coverage.

Jon, Thanks for the heads up. Since I live in New York USA, I try to purchase everything from online companies here. The shipping is certainly cheaper, and somewhat quicker.

I seem to have the best luck with Amazon. But, shipping is outrageous! Hopefully someone in the know will direct us to where to find them.

Jon,

Thank you for sharing the video with us, I have never used Vallejo paints and am curios about them. I have learned a lot from you video and am sure it will make it much easier when I finally do try some Vallejo paints.

Thanks Jon!

I'll also be stumping up for a Badger 105 after this!

Hi Martin

are you looking for the big coverage or the fine nozzle?

the 105 patriot is a big ugly brush that moves more paint than a busy B&Q superstore.

the Renegade Velocity is the brush with the fine nozzle

I miss my Iwata, I'll be honest, neither of those is doing it for me like the Iwata did but I am also interested in the Harder & Steenbeck Inifinity 2 in 1 - money is tight! I can't buy a new brush, so living with the badgers

To be honest Jon, I'll be getting both, although I mostly model modern stuff so the 105 seems perfect.

My next project is the Dragon Tiger I late production so I guess the renegade would come in handy for the camo, but I think the brush I'm using just now will suffice til I can afford it.

Thanks for the videos Jon, as a new comer to the hobby they've been a great help!

The Renegade is absolutely PERFECT for doing camo schemes. Using the vallejo glaze medium and the restrictor on the brush I can paint very fine lines quite nicely with it.

I will be looking for a new brush in october, though. I'd like something in between the renegade and the Iwata HP-C+ which I absolutely LOVED.

I'd love an Iwata but the budget constraints are a huge factor.

Just out of interest what PSI do you spray the vallejo model air? I seem to get a lot of blockages in the nozzle with it?

I tend to vary my air depending on what I'm doing, as I will lower my PSI for finer lines to knock down the risk of making "spiders" but I think I spray most of my stuff between 25-30psi. I would be more specific but my regulators dial has kind of fogged up inside and I can't see it properly. I tend to just get it "Feeling" right from experience.

I get paint drying on the needle when I forget to "trail off" the paint before turning off the air but a quick wipe with the cotton buds sorts it out. The exposed needle on the badger Renegade is great for this.

Jon I ended up getting a tax rebate so I plumped for an Iwata HP-C+!

I'll definitely try out some of the techniques I've learned here on an old model (possibly even my Chally 2).
