The original UK supplied Ser 1 and 2 LR had very poor and underpowered motors for australia and it is common to see these re motored with a small holden 6 cyl engine which gives an excellent 4 WD.
Cheers

Ahww the memory's of driving around the farm shooting roo's in a Series 2 long wheel base with a 186 Holden donk. Later on a 202.

When our SQN was having it's series 3's replaced with 110's, it was "discovered" that the series 2 workshop wagon that our Tech Support Tp jelously guarded (a) Was written off as being beyond economic repair and (b) Was running a rover v8.

Those RAEME guys loved their little sports car:)

The 4X4 SF variant appears to be the RFSV as that was the only variant with the solid rims (needed in the Pilbara). The rwraparound bullbar is also an RFSV feature. It looks like thewy have fitted WMIK to some of the RFSV's. Somewhere I have great Walkaround of a Pilbara Regt RFSW but they are old fashioned film and I am stumped as to where they may be. I'll have rummage around on the weekend.

First of all thanks for the history lesson, I know this can be a tender topic people are passionate about their 4x4's. Here in Canada we can have neither Land Cruisers nor Defenders so we must be satisfied with Range Rovers and Tacomas. There are plenty of old series Land Rovers parked in fields and tarped in Newfoundland, people loved them and are still reluctant to sell them.

So the solid wheels were designed for use in the Pilbara and MOD kept them as a standard issue or were there different wheels for different conflicts?
Frenchy I like the aerial view of the Landie it really shows off the position of all the details. Does anyone have a diagram of how the roll cage/gun support is made in the backs of these or are these as Al suggests standard WMIK (weapons mount improvement kit) found on the new Bronco kit?
What does RFSV stand for, I tried to search it but I couldn't find the acronym explained.

Thanks for the links it is hard to used to all these acronyms.
I'm going to try an isolate the bull bars from one or two of the photos so I can see what's involved.

G'day Bill,
SRV's were issued to the Sqn's of 2/14th from late 2000. They were an interim vehicle before ASLAV was adopted. At the time we were not happy to have them but had to put up with it. Funny thing however, early 2001 the whole fleet was grounded due to axle housing problems, seat mounting points and illegal mods. The mods finally passed inspection, but every one of the roll cages had a small problem. And that was that each cage was manufactured for that particular car only. So when we removed the cages to attach the MCS Barracuda a most of the cages were mixed up and proved to be a very painful exercise to find the right car that each one belonged to.

You beat me to it! I was processing these images to put up because they are as clear as can be, thanks for being so thoughtful.

Let me also add my 2 cents to this thread...

Definately IŽd like to see someone converting one of the 1/35 LR kits into the Aussie version. Among all the different modifications they have I prefere this RFSU vehicle...

Jiri

RAAF ADG QRF rover. Comonly refered to as "gun buggy" or "55" (1/2 a 110). Now replaced by the Bushmaster IMV. The RFSV on page 2 is also an ADG vevicle. Commonly used for long range patrols around bases.

Hi Matt,

absolutely possible, I am not an ADF specialist. However the RFSVs are at least similar modification. I really like those two spare wheels in the cargo area

Does the Isuzu engine in the Perentie look noticeably different to the Land Rover engines? Does it have the Isuzu logo on the valve cover(s)? If anyone has a top down picture of both the Wolf WMIK and a Perentie Rover engines I'd like to see the differences.
Good to see the hard top coming along, can use the windscreen for a 4x4 Perentie conversion but not much else.

I went to the Australian War Memorial just after new years and one of the exhibits there was this LRPV used by the SAS in Afghanistan. This one take out by an IED and made unserviceable, though nobody on board was severely wounded.
