Wow .... fantastic painting Joe. Great job with the leather and helmet. When reducing the image to approximate size, the cheeks and nose are very "rosy" to say the least. Very possible if cold, but as the colours and tone are quite warm, it feels a bit "too much". If one sees old images of caricatures that are indicating flu symptoms, they would be painted with the same rosy features.
This is very "nit-picky" criticism on a figure that is beautifully painted and well beyond what I can do myself, so hopefully you understand what I mean?

Hi Joe
Really great painting. The face and helmet are particularly well done. Seems like you performed a major surgery on the SK Miniature bust by Carl Reid or is this a different release

Always glad to know another Asian figure painter

Thanks for sharing

Very nice work Joe. I particularly like your treatment of the helmet- it looks suitably dirty and worn! The leather is top-notch too and the hint of dirt coming up his right arm is a nice touch.

My only criticism follows Franks- I get a feeling that the figure is in a temperate climate yet his cheeks are quite red suggesting its very cold. Still, it is quite a minor thing and I don't think it detracts from the overrall effect very much at all. Once again, great work !

Hi Frank,

Thank you for your valuable comments on my work.
Actually, you are not the only one to talk about this problem (too rosy).

Nice paint job, my only issue is with the swastika not being properly aligned with the eagle, this is not your problem, I would have removed it and painted it in the correct position, looks a bit muddy looking.
Nice work.

Well in my opinion the rosy is okay, because he could be in a colder climate. Personally, when it is colder out, my face turns a bit red. Just my 2 cents. Haha

Very well done. I agree with Frank. The cheeks are too rosey. They make it look like he has some serious chaffing going on.

Hi Joe
amazing work on the bust.
I like the rosy cheeks. As it looks like the figure has just been in the heat of battle.
Only wish I could paint as good as you.

i have to agree with some of the others. although it looks great, the first thing i saw when i opened the link to this thread was a face of a clown. the rosey cheeks give it that look. focus on the face and imagine a red ball on his nose.
perhaps its alot of the red and white tone colors along with the scruffiness

All I can say is wow! Face of a clown? It looks like it could be from any number of things including windburn. Or don't soldiers get that that any more?

I wouldn't go that far. Bringing hues like red to the cheeks is very difficult. I have over-done and under-done it myself on several figures of various sizes. I think here Joe has done a stellar job and you could simply interpret the red cheeks as the soldier being puffed out after a brisk march into a cold wind- perfectly feasible.

of course its feasible. never said it wasnt. its all up to interpretation. and what i interpret is that there is a bit too much red. first thing "i see" when i opened the thread was a clowny look to the face due to the reds and whites. thats my opinion. my opinion doesnt have to match, but its because its my opinion
