Hi. Tanks in WWII often carry some wooden boxes on top. I wonder what color i should paint them with ? Does anyone have any suggestions ? Tamiya recommends XF-57 Buff but this color does not come close to wood color ? Thanks.

Hi there,
color for wooden boxes could be a very difficult theme. Most boxes are made from spruce so the color XF-57 Buff or XF-55 Deck Tan would be appropriate.
I my company, we have dozens of ammo boxes from transporting goods and the colors are mostly natural (light) wood and RAL 6031 Gelboliv, we also have some US boxes that are mostly Olive Drab. Maybe you can search for restored vehicles that might have wood boxes attached on.

...my two cents...
If it is a military issue box, likely it will have been painted whatever kind of green etc that army is using. Plus fading and such, there's a whole big range of colours to choose from.
Civilian boxes I would think to be more likely the colour of the wood. People have suggested a buff colour as a base, with oil paints (burnt ochre, burnt sienna) to effect the wood grain. Plus weathering, a whole other story.
I've found info on how to create wood effects in threads relating to the construction of WWOne biplanes, btw.

This website may be worth a look for those who are into WW2 German stuff (more than 300 boxes are pictured ! ) :

It's in French ( you can have the pages translated by Google) but the pics talk by themselves

Thanh,
If you're going for dead-on historical or technical accuracy, you'll need to fill us in on the subject that you're modeling (nationality, time period, type of box, etc). Like with Frenchy's suggested link, there's a lot of thought and research that could be put into the matter if accuracy is the primary consideration.
However, if you're just looking for a "generic" un-painted wooden box finish, this is a pretty good little tutorial:
TimeLines Painting Wood Grain by John Long
I think Mr. Long gets some pretty good results with a pretty quick finishing technique.

Thanks everyone for the info and especially the links. They have been a great help. Now at least i have some color to match. My M4 Sherman and T-34 tanks came with 2 wooden boxes each. I don't know what color i should paint them.
Thanks again.

od and 4bo green. 4bo green is left up to your imagination. For od, I recommend using MM od. Don't confues this with od ana, as that is a later color variation.
