Hi all.
I recentley saw a former NVA (East German) T72 in a Green/Black/Gray camo pattern, how wide spread was this pattern and did it extend to their BMP 1s 2s.

Hi!
As far as I know this camo was not very widely used as it was introduced in the late eighties. Here is an interesting link (unfortunately it is all German):

Hope this helps a little!

Hi, I agree... this 3-tone-camo was not very often used.
Most verhicles were painted green.
Also I found only green vehicles in my book, but a photo of an "brand-new" T-55AM in a 3-tone camo.
But this vehicle seems to be green, yellow and another light color. (it´s a b/w photo)
But:
Revell had a BRDM-2 and BTR-70 with the green/black/grey-scheme, so a BMP also could be possible in this combination... I think.
greetings...

Thanks both in my stash off to builds, one reference i have found said the camo was due to be introduced in 1990, so it seem's the NVA were planning to push this scheme out to all units, but as we now know events took over.
Once again many thanks for the help.

Hmm, I found some russian vehicles in this 3-tone camo... green/grey/black.
But this scheme seems to be a bit different, but also looks interesting.

yes the Soviets started to play with diffrent camo schems and this was carried on in the post Soviet era, have a book about the T80 series of tanks and all, except the concept tanks, are carrying the pattern your describing most of the photos are from Moscow during the attempted coup, along with BMP/BTRs, and then when the Yeltsin government shelled the White House.
There was quite some variation in this scheme although it seems to have been formalised now. The Tankograd book Russian army on Parade has some great photos.
Ive built a couple of BMPs T80 and converted Tamiyas T72 to a T90 and they all carry this scheme. Also if your looking for somthing a bit different look at the kit the Soviets took to Afghanistan, VDV units using BMP2s had some intresting patterns.

I cannot find the photos right this second, but I do have one at least that shows the NVA painted the T-72 Tamiya depicted in the kit in the 3 tone cammo of the early '90's just before the reunification.

That would be great, the photos i saw were only of the front quarter of the tank and a very distant paraded photo.
Thanks

Hi Steve,
I can only second what the others stated. It seems that vehicles undergoing main maintenance service have been slowly repainted in the 3 tone cammo.
I just uploaded some pics of veh in this cammo in my gallery here at amorama (only for discussion purpose).
Here http://www.thetankmaster.com/ENGLISH/afv/t-72_01.asp and here http://www.thetankmaster.com/ENGLISH/afv/t-72_001.asp you'll find another sample. Altough I'd bet that the cammo was applied after service life of this tank for exhibition purpose. But from all that could be found it seems very realistic.
Kind regards
V

Sorry to hijack the thread, but I think I might have to use this three tone camo for my current whatif project; well that makes one detail I am decided on.

A few more of the winter scheme:
Most NVA camo vehichles here seem to be preserved ones. Not sure if those are reliable as references as it's possible that the new owners painted them in three color camo becourse it looks "cooler" than plain green. Just a thought.
Cheers,
/E

Thanks a million Erik
That T-55 looks stunning
I agree with you. I've looked for NVA t-72 pics and I noticed that most of them actually are green
