They are carrying food containers, supposedly hot when filled but if they did make it to the front no doubt they would be cold.
Just out of interest i was researching what i intend to do for my campaign entry and found that i have a picture of that photo in a volume of the Second Great war (A very old set of books i was given ideal for research) . It was taken at Sevastopol.
