Hey all,

In experimenting a bit with this varnish for the last couple of nights I'd like to ask those who are more experienced with this product if, once dry, does this matt varnish really dry flat? Or does it leave a bit of a sheen as on the right wheel on the pic below?:

Just so you all know, both wheels where first gloss-coated using Future. After the Future dried for a couple of days, the wheel on the left was sprayed with the Vallejo matt varnish without any thinner (neat). The wheel on the right was sprayed with the varnished thinned with distilled water. Again, notice that the wheel on the right has a slight sheen to it while the wheel on the left became whitish as it dried, with some splotches of white in certain areas.

So, does the wheel on the right represent what those of you with experience with this varnish think it should look like?

Thanks!

I never applied it over future, but I have applied it over Vallejo gloss varnish, and it has done an excellent job in flattening out the gloss real nice

I apply Vallejo Matt Varnish straight from the bottle through the airbrush...no thinning necessary.

Last one I sprayed with it....works great for me.

If I get that whitish tint on anything I usually thin my mix a little more and spray lighter and further away giving a more gentle, gradual build up on the surface. I'm not sure why you are getting that slight sheen though.

Thanks for the responses, guys! I'll try adding a bit less thinner (water in my case) to the varnish to see how it goes.

Scott, that is one beautiful looking model! Man, the weathering is superb! And i sure is looks flat to me.

Hi

You wil find that very few flat varnishes will give you a dead flat finish, most and I count the Vallejo one in this list dry with a very fine sheen to them which is actualy closer to what you are realy after, a real dead flat none relecting finish looks a bit un-natural in model painting as most thing have a slight sheen in real life just through daily wear.

The white you wntioned is again a problem with a lot of flat varnishes as the makers use pumis in the manufacturing process, and if its not properly mixed or put on too thick the pumis will build up.

If you do want an absolute dead flat even though it does look un-natural give the Xtracolor one a go, it is an enamel product but is the flatest finish I have ever seen, don't know about their acrylic version, I have never tried it.

Thanks for the feedback, Paul. In reading about several other brands of flat varnishes I'm finding pretty much the same as what you've mentioned. I still like Vallejo, I just need to play around with the range some more.

Testors Dullcoat works wonders, it's the flatest varnish I've used.

Using Vallejo Matte Varnish right out of the bottle, applied with a brush, ALWAYS left me with a sheen, but airbrushing it, thinned with distilled water, ALWAYS gives me a dead flat, and that's out of the same bottle!

Hi

That would probably because when brush painting you ended up with a much thicker layer than when you airbrushed it.
