I'm digging in to some open topped self propelled artillery (marder, nashorn, 251/22) hat sort of tools, kit, whatever, might be carried, where it may be and how it is used. I'm not tiling about standard Ovm but arty specific stuff. For eg, I've seen stuff about flags and range poles. How mNy of those would be used? Thanks for any help. I know nothing about this subject!!!

There isn't a whole lot of arty-specific kit. For the aiming poles, which are red and white striped, they come in 3 foot sections. Usually two complete poles, 4 sections, are carried. You would also see a bucket to fill with water and swab the bore between firing. Possibly a fuze box, ammo can. An Aiming Circle, tripod with a domes cover on one end.

Some of the stuff Gino stated. Ramming staffs, bore brush on the end of the staff. Can of bore cleaner.
Here is something I put together just for artillery modeling It goes through what you will need and shows many of the tools

I just got done with a dio concerning German arty. I did a lot of research for it. All German guns used pretty much the same stuff, only the size would differ. You will need:canvas or leather covers for the gunsite, breech and muzzle, ramrod, aiming stakes, gunners angle, gunners' pouch, projectiles, propellant cases, propellent bags, bakelite cnister for un-used propellent bags.
Most German batteries used field phones for inter battery commo with the Fire Direction control(Battery Hq) and then radio commo with the Forward observers. So the FDC would have a telephone swithboard, radios and the previously mentioned aiming circle with mre aiming stakes. The FDC laid in the guns of the whole battery with this aiming circle by serveying from at least 2 known points. So,that's a little info to get you started,HTH

I forgot to add,Most of the ammo items are already available as plastic or brass detail sets. The other small items that I mentioned will be released very soon by Greymatter Figures. One set will have the accessories for the German 105mm lFh18 and the other set will have the telephone swithboard, aiming circle and stakes. HTH

Thanks o both ofyou. Mike, your link is exactly what I was looking for. One question. On sp arty, would they also have the bucket of water? I ask because it seems like space would be cramped.

SP arty is the same cannon as towed arty. In all of the dozens of pics I saw of arty in action I never saw a water bucket. The only "bucket" I saw was the canister for unused projectile powder bags.
The only water buckets I've seen were used for black powder firing pieces.

It depends on the type of ammumition used. For semi fixed ammunition (with a casing) you would not find a bucket. On separate loading ammunition (projectile and separate powder bags)....like the US 155mm gun or 8 inch howitzer, the bucket is used to hold bore cleaner with a bore brush nearby. The breech and seating area require periodic swabing.
As for sp vs towed....sp is just the towed weapon with an engine and tracks!! It is still the same weapon. Most of the other OVM carried would be normal vehicle OVM

Thanks again to all of you. Jerry, your FPF dio is what has inspired my quest for this sort of accuracy. Again, I really appreciate your help and especially your experience.
