I'm finally on the home stretch for the extended Target Shoot Back Campaign and need some tips for selecting color(s) for some minor paint chipping. The paint scheme is a three color consisting of dark yellow, brown and green. The dark yellow being the base color.
Can anyone point me in the right direction for selecting some paint chip colors.

The mix I have seen quoted most often is Tamiya Enamels XF-64 Red Brown and XF-18 Semi Gloss Black. Mix 50:50.
You can also use a straight Dark Grey for chips and wear points but I use a 4B pencil as it gives a bit better control.

I use multiple colors, depends on the situation and feel I am going for. I have used Rust, browns, greys, and even greens. I also use Cool Grey and Metallic Silver Prismacolor pencil. It all depends on the effect.
sorry I could not be of greater help. All I can suggest is start with the primer color of the vehicle and work back to the steel.

I like using a very dark grey. Tamiya NATO Black is my favorite.
You can also use a very dark brown, like burnt sienna.

Thanks Scott, Kevin and Matthew for your replies. I went with a dark hull red and grey to get a color I liked. I'm applying very little chipping with one of those green scratch pads used for cleaning pots and pans. So far it seems to be going well.

A little late, but I find Floquil Weathered Black to be perfect.

I always use the 70822 color from Vallejo (Camo SS bdark brown)
Is a very dark color but the look is close to a dark rusty metal. Is the one that I use in all my models.
Regards
MIG

Hi,
I use vallejo paint no. 826 black brown mixed with some 866 grey green (2:1 or 3:1).
For the more recent rusted chips i use 859 black red mixed with some 866 grey green (2:1 or 3:1).
The mix is ofcourse personal...
Regards,
Remco

I would use different colors, some places of brown and green can show some base color lightened with white just a tiny bit, and some places showing primer. Some places of brown can show green. Mostly tho i'd use a mix of rust and black. And finally a pencil on some edges.

Lots of great tips here for paint chip colors! I appreciate everyone's input on my question.
Mig, after reading your post I ran downstairs to check my paint stash for the 70822 color from Vallejo (Camo SS bdark brown) as I admire your work so much! No luck so it will go on my next order!

As well as the dark brown mentioned by Mig above, I tried recently using a paler tone of the colour to be chipped where the paintwork would have been rubbed, then a slightly smaller brushstroke of the brown on top. This has the effect of looking like a scuff... i used it on a landing craft where the main colour is blue-grey, in areas where crew rubbed on the sides, or fenders just scuffed the paint....

If you want to super detail it, you can use a dark grey chip with a thin outline of primer red.
