Got a couple of ideas as to what it COULD be, but it could be the angle of the photo...

Looks to me like an M8 with the front fenders off and a chunk missing from the glacis(?) plate on the starboard side.

I was thinking Staghound for a moment but it is pretty much an M8 Greyhound with the wings off.

There is a pic on the web that shows one without the wings in a museum and it looks pretty close.

Of course the upper AAMG ring is missing but there are enough similarities to call it I reckon

Yup thats a M8 for sure ..not that good a condition but its a M8 .. the M3 light tank gun manlet is one way to sort it and the lifting lugs are in the exact same place and the light guards are the same .. its a M8

The chalked text looks Spanish to me, but that leaves Spain, the Philipines and and about any country south of the US as possible owners.

Yep, what the others say... Also, the bottom glacis plate doesn't look "right". The angles look "off" and it looks wide.

To me it looks like some applique armor has been added or the part has been replaced with new steel plate. My $0.02 of course...

Thanks for your replies - yes. looking at it again, it IS clearly an M8. However, what threw me slightly, is a mirror of Patrick's comments - there is something not exaxtly right about that front plate.

It was taken in Spanish Sahara (as it was then)...

Have a look at this picture, it shows you pretty well which part is missing. There's nothing wrong with the front plate, it's just the bolted on wheel covers that are missing.

After looking over this again, I think Stefan may be right about the front bottom plate being normal.

But, it appears to me that the wheel covers aren't the only thing missing and I think it may come full circle to Gary's initial comment: part of the upper glacis plate looks to be missing???

In essence, yes, part of the glacis is missing. The glacis is made of three parts: the middle part is at the same time the roof of the crew compartment. The two parts at each side are the "roof" of the fender (or what in German we call the "Radkasten" - wheel box; sorry don't know the proper translation...). They look to be bolted to the middle part and that's where they were torn off. A little bit remains on the left side.

At least that's my theory...

Not sure exactly what advantage it gives, other than maintenance access, since it removes a layer of metal from the already-thin sides...
