Can anybody tell me if the Ausf. G version was equipped with zimmerit? It appears that most of the other versions were. I can't find any am parts for it, but can always go with the putty and screwdriver method. TIA.

Negative. It didn't start til after the Ausf H was in production. And I'm not sure what you mean by "most of the other versions having it"....if you mean other versions of the panzer IV, since the A, B, C, D, E, F, and G did not have it. Only mid-late H and Early J had zimm. HTH.

I should add that there is some chance that rebuilds had it added later, or perhaps so called "field applied" zimm was used. But not in original production.

Matt, zimmerit was I believe factory applied during production of H and J only, not G. It seems that it could have been applied in the field between Jan and Aug 1944, so potentially could be on a G - there are photos showing some very rough applications that may be field applications. As the external visible differences between some G and H examples can be minor, I guess it's not always possible to tell them apart in photos, so you can't always be sure what you're looking at. Some G's have side skirts for example.
However, not doing the zimmerit would obviously be OK for a G, so if you want to save work, that's the way to go. Then again If you want to do zimmerit, then you could probably get away with claiming field application, and even on the side skirts...
Info from New Vanguard, Pz IV Ausf.G,H and J by Hilary Doyle and Tom Jentz - definitely worth getting.

That book is on my "to buy" list. Reading about zimmerit, it was not applied in the field. I'll just wait to do an ausf. h for the zimmerit
