I am interested to an Israeli Super Sherman diorama. But first have to make the model. I d like to have some suggestions about:

1)Is there a full kit converted to the Super Sherman, or i have to buy a Sherman kit and convert it my self?

2)What kit you think provides the best quality for the Sherman i want to make

3)Does any body have any sources of info or pictures about it?

I am waiting for as much info you have till i start making anything . I am also gathering from all around my sources

Hello MajorGoose

By SuperSherman, you mean M50 or M51 ? Then you'll find kits by DML and Academy.
If you mean M1 Supersherman, an earlier israely sherman, then there's no "official" kit out there. But I think you'd have to begin with an italeri M4A1 hull. Then, for the rest...

Personaly, I've got an early M50 waiting for it's paint. It's got an italeri cast hull, white metal VVSS and the rest is resin made by Azimuth.

Hi goose,

for information on all kits and accessories available for the IDF shermies checkout my site and the IDF Armour Group site from my site. YOu'll be able to find photo links as well including walk arounds from the LAtrun museum and an article by tom Gannon on the early shermans. The sherman reference page also has links to articles on building the M50/51 series of sherman.

I've built a couple of the Dragon M50 kits; they aren't bad. They do have a few issues, though. Being based on their M4A4 kits, the lower hull is too long just like the rest of them. Mike Canaday (usually on Missink Links) has a site with corrections. I'm too technically inept to post a link. The turret given is a high-bustle variety, creating a unique turret/hull combination only found on Israeli Shermans. The DML HVSS suspension is a bear to assemble, and is structurally rather weak--be careful. The LTL tracks are a blessing here because they don't stress the running gear. It appears that the front gun trunnion casting and the rear bustle can be sawed off as well and mated to some other low-bustle turret (say, Tamiya) for another variation. Virtually all hull types and turret types were used for M50's. Oh, and the earlier VVSS is easy to retrofit; I did that with one of mine and also backdated it to the air-cooled early French-modified hull. That too is easy with donor Italeri or Tamiya engine decks and Tamiya air cleaners.

The Academy M51 looks rather nice, I have one but haven't built it yet. The muzzle brake is too shallow in profile, and some say it is too wide. I'm not sure, it does look freakin' huge but so was the real one. I'll be correcting the profile and leaving the width alone. Academy's HVSS also looks more solid than DML's. The turret is wide open, ready for an interior. Say, Josh, know where we can get photos of the M51 gun and turret arrangement? Gannon's book is great for the M50 on that, but not for the M51. I haven't got a DML M51 so I can't comment on that kit. HTH,
Greg

You also have teh option of the Verlinden M51 conversion. THis has a PE muzzle brake and solid resin turret. Mate that with an Italerie M4A41 and Easy 8 suspension form DML and you're good to go. I did both the M50 and M51 a few years ago before the Academy and DML kits. I found the Easy 8 suspension time consuming but not that bad and they have held up quite well.
