Hi all, I have just started using Vallejo flat varnish through my airbrush I use my old badger which gives broad coverage. now my problem is getting the varnish out of the air brush and onto the model, I thinned it out about six to one but no luck so I opened up the paint flow to full, very spasmodic I eventually got the model covered so I tried a bit of tamiya acrylic through the brush,no problems.can anyone tell me what Im doing wrong, more thinning higher pressure?

Have never had a problem spraying any of the Vallejo Varnishes straight from the bottle with no thinning.

About 20lbs of pressure should be more than enough.

Make sure the bottle is shaken up well, as it can separate from the carrier a bit, but otherwise is good to go right out of the bottle.

Hi John,

Hope I find you well.

I've just starting using Vallejo's matt varnish too, but have not suffered the problems you describe.

One thing I always do with any Vallejo product is shake them vigorously before use. As someone else said... once you think you've shaken it enough... shake it some more!

I'm probably going over the top, but I shake mine for approx 2 minutes before I use it. I run it through the bush at 15-20PSI.

Forgot to mention, I don't thin the varnish at all.

Hope that helps

Gary

I used some gloss last night and ended up with a big mess. My Sheman was looking so nice too. It's now soaking in Windex. This was a gloss coat over decals. I used Future before the decals and it went on perfect. I thinned the Vallajo with water about 50/50 and it still came out in thick blue blobs.

I may not have shaken it enough and will try it on scrap next time. Should have done that this time but lesson learned. I shot it at about 25 PSI.

I have not tried Vallajo Model Air yet and am now wondering if I should. My local shop started selling it in place of Tamiya. I love the Tamiya. It's the best spraying paint I have ever shot.

Hi Albert, pain about the sherman hope you can turn it around ok.I have found that Vallejo does seperate quickly model colour and model air, strangely i shake the paints really well never thought about the varnish.Al vallejo are great paints very dense pigments I love them but they are a little fragile and wont take much handling If you spray them use a retarder because they dry quick and can block your nozzle.

Actually I couldn't disagree more. Used properly and fully cured, Vallejo Paint is one of the harder tougher paints on the market. Secret is, clean your parts, and use a good primer before putting your color coats on.

Whether you are using the varnishes from the Model Color line, or the Model Air line....makes no difference, as it is the same product in the bottles. They don't do anything different to the ones in the Air line. Both have the same consistency.

If I use the varnish again I will practice on scrap first. It was a mistake to use something new on a nice project. It was a lesson learned. I will be spraying my Sherman tomorrow but with the Tamiya so it will match the turret which did not need to have the finish removed.

I will try the Vallajo Air on my next project and see how it goes. I think the colors will be fine but the varnish is a different story. I may just stick to Future as I know that well.
