so at first I wanna say hello to you all and let you greet youre newest member from germany ! (sorry for the bad english that will be upcoming
)
so i think I have two good (maritime-)diorama (both 1/72) ideas and i would like you to help me choosing 1 and putting it to a fittting form.
1.
an american torpedoboat is making a hard turn ,all the torpedos shot away and a big steel wall (by a battleship) is sticking up right before him.(btw i dont like this as much as the other idea but it seems to be much easier )
2.
in the north sea (big tides) (at night=in a shadowbox(i would try painting the light at the ship eg. at the lights))theres a transport ship(i would only make it from the heck till the first chimney(=right word in this use ?)
and a waterplane (by the enemie ) would fly very close aboth him(so this is a bit harder to do but I think it would look EPIC =) )
so what you think what could i d and what not ?

The issue you are going to run into is space. Torpedo boats did not get all the close to battleship. Even if we get the PT boat to 200 yards in 1/72 scale you are talking 2.5 meters of space between the two.
As far as your float plane goes it is only a little easier to pull off, a 5 meter fly by would only be 7 cm between the two. That is not too bad but then you have the plane and the ship. Give the stack on the ship a 10 meter height and you have another 13 cm to deal with . So you have 20 cm to deal with plus the plane. Not impossible but that gets tall.
Maybe stick with the float plane and only show the very top of a ships mast with say a flag getting caught on the float as it roars past?

You could use different scales for the attacker and defender to produce a forced perspective !!!!

If your torpedo boat is 1/72 and you are making a light box to display the dio you could use a 1/600 or 1/700 or 1/1200 scale ship to get the idea of distance.

The problem would be how you blend the sea between the two to maintain the effect without giving yourself a big headache as to how to achieve the right look.

It is probably easier to use this idea of forced perspective with an aircraft in the distance using 1/144 or 1/350 etc that could be mounted on a backdrop photo with distant clouds and horizon. That way the blending of sea under the boat to meet the backdrop might not be so hard to achieve.

I have seen people use different scales on land sea and air dios but it does take a lot of imagination to do it right but would be great to see you pull it off .

Good luck

Dream big, build small. I want to do the battle of Kursk in 1/35. That will never happen. So, I'm looking at 1/144. Dream big, build small.
