Well i thought i would be concise in the title!
i am building this new Panda Hobby's MRAP M-ATV - Very nice btw - and wanted to get the colour right as i could - i have a few different paints i can choose from but do you guys think its a "desert Tan" 33446 or a "Sand" 33711 colour ?
Basically i want the best match - i am leaning towards a Tamiya Acrylic XF-78 wooden deck tan with XF 55 deck tan as the light colour?
Whaddya think?
thanks for any help guys

Hi
Some US service guys will give you more accurate statements but the vehicles i saw in a military show (including a M-ATAV) were in an "orange" desert sand.
I'm building a US vehicle but i haven't yet choose the colour so i can't help you more.

The closest model color match to modern CARC Middlestone is Testors Model Master Sand (FS33531). Once weathered, it looks really good.

Sorry, can't help you with Tamiya paints, I use Testors Model Master paints exclusively. I have heard there is no out of the bottle close color from Tamiya though. You will have to mix a couple colors to get close.

For airbrushing Testors MM enamels, I use lacquer thinner to thin it down. It should be about the consistency of milk. Spray using about 20-30 psi and you should be good. I really like the way their enamels go on.

I use the Tamiyas acrylic paints, I wish I could use the Testors MM enamels. However without a spray booth I can keep spraying the enamels.
So I had to find a mix...so here's what I came up with. I mix Tamiyas Buff XF-57 and Tamiyas Deck Tan XF-55, something like 60% deck tan to 40% buff. Sometimes I'll mix in a little Tamiya flat white.
How I found this was I downloaded the "IModelKit" app. It's a great app at that. It has many features such as paint mixer, simply pull up the paint brand and colors, then mix. Not only easy to use there are other features such as FS colors and numbers.
Happy Modeling,
Joe

I almost didn't believe there was such an app for the iPhone. Not that it helps me, an Android user, but it sure sounds interesting.

Thanks for mentioning iModelkit, I'll be downloading it to my iPad tonight. Now if only they would make a Droid version.
As to the original question, I have a Surefire light that I sprayed with the touch up cans we used for our trucks in Afghanistan that I can post up as a color swatch if you like, but honestly I think that the Testors is great, and those Tamiya mixing colors are as close as you need. You really don't see much color variation on these vehicles, even with sun bleaching.

I believe these MRAP-ATVs are made by Oshkosh in Wisconson USA. Look them up on the web, Call and ask for Public Relations Say you are a model builder making a model of their ATV and ask for the color.
1. If they can't answer the question, ask for the company archives, tell them the same thing. Ask the Questions be friendly. The local IPMS will probably have the information.
I belong to the I.I. Sikorsky Historical Archives, and the local IPMS, so if you need some Blackhawk colors let me know.

Heh Guys !
Seeing all kinds of MRAPs everyday over here their base color is more of a Tan like
XF59 Desert Yellow
a little "lighting" up with some XF60 Dark Yellow perhaps.
But the base tone is more into a brown than into a sand/yellow tone
most other vehicules here have the usual "sand/yellow" CARC tone
as in Iraq
hope this helps
Cheers
