I just got the motorized Tamiya 1/16 scale King Tiger with duffle bag in the mail today. Looks like a very nice kit. I traded my Aber 1/16 scale Tiger I super detail set for it straight up. Figured I couldn't use it on the full function remote Tiger I without losing most of the details every time I hit a bump or a bush.
Looks like my Tiger I now has a playmate. This kit looks really cool, even includes a turned aluminum barrel. This is the one with the "production turret", or at least the package says it is the production turret. Of course since I have no WW2 German armor knowledge Tamiya could be playing tricks on me.
Looks like I'm going to have a nice winter build with this kit.

I've got a Static model of the Porsche turreted one.I bet it would be a drop on to youe K T
I have the Sherman howitzer. It is fun to go tearing cross country in garden chips and mud.
Dragon makes 1/72 RC Tiger 1's.I have one of them for when it is raining outside.Looking at the design of that,I may try to scratch the Berge Tiger turret.

Of course since I have no WW2 German armor knowledge Tamiya could be playing tricks on me.
Rob---there are a number of folks on the site that are German experts that I'm sure could help you on this. But I would not let this bother me---you appear to be happy with your trade, and that's the bottom line my friend!---good luck and please post some pics when you get a chance.

I've got pics of my Tiger and my Pershing on webshots if anyone is interested. They are both pretty much out of the box as they are runners and not shelf bound. The only PE on the Tiger is the engine screens.
You can check em in the RC Tank folder Here
I am planning of doing a repaint this winter as I'm not happy with the MM Acryl Dunklegleb...too green looking. I've also learned alot about Tigers since I built this as I got my hands on the Tiger in Combat books.

I don't know why my original post got edited, and just leave the quote there. I must done it in one of those drunk session I had. I am sorry guys. The following is what I typed originally.
"I ditto that WWH, and also, would really love see the fine T50 that Rob finished as the leader of the barbarrosa build"
Sorry guys for the inconvenience, I can't believe I am so bloody stupid and deleted what I typed, it's not like people are not gonna notice...sorry.

I would like to see in progress pictures too.I bought the Henschl turreted one years ago,and built it for my Brother. It had the square chin Mantlet.I myself bought the Prosche turret, and I recall the box at the time stated it was a Porsche turret King Tiger.
Dave,I would like to see some more pictures of your T-50.Thta would be interesting in 1/16th even as a static model

Rob,
Hey! Glad you like the Konigstiger I sent you. I sure can't wait to use that Aber set on my Tiger 1 - hopefully will do it justice.
To answer your question, there is no such thing as a "Production" turret, this is just a marketing name. Many people also call the turret you have the "Henschel" turret, but this is also incorrect. What you have is actually called the "serien turm". It is the more common of the two types. About 50 or so King Tigers were fitted with an earlier, rounded turret that is referred to as the "Porsche" turret. Most, if not all of these wore Zimmerit. The serien turm equipped Tiger II's had more of a variety with regards to zimmerit. Some had it, some didn't.
I would be happy to help more if you want, I have three of the four Jentz/Doyle books on the Tiger series, they are truly excellent.
HTH,
Scott
