The latest Tamya kit M113 tells in it s instructions to paint the alice packs and all the other bags in olive drab. Is that correct? Because I have seen some packs in OIf that show camouflage colors . Are olivedrab rucksacks like the ALice used in OIf or all they all now camouflated in many colorS?

If you can, get the Concord Special Forces #26 issue. There are some cool pics of the various vehicles with ALICE's packs strewn about.

Squadron is now carrying the new Modern Accessories set (as well as the TOW hummer). I guess the most basic question I have is: Was the ALICE pack still in widespread use with USMC and Army units during OIF? IF so what percentage? Were most guys still carrying the ALICE-type packs depicted in the new Tamiya set?

This topic has come up before...... The awnser is yes ALICE is still in wide use in the Army/Marines.... Most troops have the optin to buy their own gear as they see fit (mostly the SF guys)
I Believe Camo Packs are almost Exclusive to the Marines......Unless bought by the Individual.......

Be advised that some of the 'camo' comes in covers.

I can only repeat the words of the 90's pop song : "who the f*** is Alice ?"
Another question now we're discussing backpacks : I saw them on TV and finally discovered them on a picture now. What is this thin backpack with the guy on the left (if not both guys) ? Just an empty backpack ? Looks a bit too nice and snug for that. What special use are these for ?

You see all sorts of packs and configurations used here in Iraq. The "ALICE" system is still in wide use. The medium rucksack and large rucksack are typically olive green overall. There are woodland camouflage medium rucks in the supply system but I have never seen a camouflage large ruck. There is a new load carrying system that is referred to as the "MOLLE" system that is being fielded by the army. The MOLLE system was initially adopted by the Marine Corps. There are a variety of packs that are produced as part of the MOLLE system. Every component of the MOLLE system that I have seen here has been woodland camouflage. They may produce MOLLE components in desert colors but I have not seen them here. I have seen covers for the packs in both the old 6-color "Chocolate Chip " pattern and the current 3-color DCU pattern. The current Molle pack system that I have seen the most of here is the CFP-90 system. There are civilian pack being used here as well. For load carrying equipment, it seems that almost anything goes. I have seen GI's using the old AK-47 magazine chest harnesses, British LCE and captured soviet LCE items. I hope this helps. #:-)

Sauer et al:
That more than helps, and I suspect it's more people than just me.
Well I feel better about ordering 5 sets of the new Tamiya equipment then to harvest the Alice gear from it for such projects as a LAV-25 and AAV7 (now where's some more aftermarket EAAK?), though I suspect we'll see more MOLLE gear sometime soon (AEF Designs make some)

I did not realize that the CFP90 was a part of the MOLLE System. Is this a for sure thing? I have a CFP90 that I use for camping/backpacking. My pack is NOT especially modular...it has the Main pack (a monster w/internal frame) and a Day Pack that attaches to the top if needed...

GeneralFailure,
Are those Polish troops? Gear looks almost the same and that's a pretty good camo pattern.

Hello aster!
I only mention the CFP-90 because the systems that I have seen appeared to be the same configuration from afar. I will be the first to admit that I am far from being a sub ect matter expert. It very well is possible that the CFP-90 is not part of the MOLLE system. Sorry if I mislead or provided any incorrect info. I was only trying to convey my observations with examples that some people may have been familiar with.

In the words of Ed McMahon:
"You are correct Sir!"
You can see the Polish flash on the left shoulder, and they are using AK derivatives of some sort.
Good eye!

No need to apologize...I am also pretty confused by the ALICE, MOLLE, buy it yourself mix of gear. Like I say, the CFP90 I have is not especially modular. If my memory serves me (?) the CFP90 was intended for Special Forces. All of them (nearly all) are in Woodland Camo pattern. The DML figure kit, U.S. Army Special Forces (#3024), has a CFP90 in it.
The more I read on equipment and vehicles for that matter, it seems that there is a WIDE range of setups. It makes it easier for us modellers, provides for more variety, and I am sure it will frustrate the rivet counter types.
