The SU-85M, where the tracks painted black? I have seen some reference photos and the tracks were black. Help!

Were the photos you saw in black and white..? If so it may just be that the tracks were coated with dark mud.
Russian tracks were made with manganese steel which weathers to an almost milk chocolate brown. When wet they would look darker of course. Later in the war there were some forged steel links that were more 'steely' in colour. I don't know of any that were painted - but odd links that were stowed on the fenders were often painted base green, so a few paionted links might have got loose and ended up on tracks
Also, some parade tanks might have been painted, if so the fenders would almost certainly be lined in white, and the whole tank would be almost spotlessly clean. Hope this helps :-)

Here are the photos I have. I think the pic's I saw were on a "museum" tank, so they were probably just painted for display.
T-34 tracks

I think I am going to go with the milky brown.

Those are good photos of a well preserved afv. The track is still pretty accurate for a tank being used on tarmac roads - perhaps around a depot, as its clean and abrasion with the road has polished the contact faces of the track. I'd guess that this beastie has been moved recently, very little track rust to be seen. If it was in use in the field - particularly in Russian autum for example you'd hardly see the track for great clods of mud sticking to the face and round the road wheels.
The fenders are worn and surface rust has been oiled from the looks of it. Tanks in service in WWII and post war would probably have had more paint, and certainly more road dust and dried mud on the fenders.
