I have been experimenting with producing realistic paint chips with enamels. I only thought it could be done with acrylics but not so. I first airbrush the base coat and let it dry. When completely cured I spray on 2 coats of hair spray. While the hairspray is still wet I sprinkle Coarse kosher salt where I want the paint chips to be. After it has dried and cured I then spray in a top coat and let it also dry. It just becomes a matter of using a soft toothbrush to scrub off the salt. I might need to use a tooth pick for some fine detail work. My 1/35 Sky Raider looks as if it has gone through several campaigns.

Sounds like your having good success, but you don't need hairspray for this technique,a little water works too, just a little, not too much to melt the salt.First sprinkle the water, then the salt, then the topcoat, then just knock and scrape off the salt.Just wanted to share, how bout some pics

I have experimented with using only water with the salt technique but I discovered that when the water dried the salt granules fell off. When I use hairspray, let it get tacky, then sprinkle the coarse, kosher salt on the granules remain where I sprinkled them. It is then an easy matter of airbrushing on a top coat of paint, letting it cure then rub off the salt using a soft toothbrush. Alan
