I look at a lot of ammo sets for US 75mm, but I keep seeing pinched top ammo--which I don't think the 75mm pack howitzer was. I am guessing this is for the Sherman 75mm. I would think the M8 SP howitzer used the same ammo as the field artillery 75mm, due to the length.

BUT, which 1/35 set is best for the 75mm pack howitzer and the M8??

Vision Models makes 75mm Pack Howitzer ammo for its M1A1 Pack Howitzer. It isare made out of turned metal and looks really nice.

There is also an old Verlinden set which has ammunition and ammunition crates for the 75mm Pack Howitzer. Check ebay

I thought the 75m field artillery ammo did not have the crimped ends, but just straight cartridge cases.

Ammunition for guns used a necked cartridge case (M18) while ammunition for howitzers used a case (M5A1) that was straight (slightly tapered, actually). For an M48 HE round the gun ammunition was 26.6 inches long; for the howitzer it was 23.5 inches.

So, the Vision Models rounds are for a 75mm gun? Would that be the M1897 as these don't look like Sherman rounds, for sure? And I did think that the M1897 used the same case as the Sherman's M2 & M3 guns.

I remain confused...

Looks like the Vision ammo is for the Sherman tank. Guess the question is still, where is the ammo for the howitzer and the M8, with the straight cartridge case as opposed to the necked cartridge case used in the longer tank ammo?

Anybody know who makes this howitzer ammo?

May have answered my own question. Found Tiger Models 75mm ammo, #353155. As I understand it it comes on six sprues, with a total of 24 rounds and 12 empty cartridge cases. Looks good.

OK...as we try to describe the ammo and what is correct and what is not....go to this link

http://www.redleg2scale.com/rbmi.html

part way down the page is a link to TM 9-1901 Ammunition. The edition on my site is from June 1944. Give it time to download as it is 83MB.

After you download, you can look up any ammunition you want!!

Beauty!

So the Vision models cases appear to be M5A1, as they should be for the pack howitzer, although, to be honest, the necking down near the shell appears to be too severe. The images from the manual show a shape that doesn't appear to have such a drastic change in diameter.

Still, they definitely aren't for the Sherman's guns and are about right for the 75mm pack how.

Thanks Kurt & Mike, I now have 80+meg less space on my hard drive...

Here is a link to a post on g503 with a photo of a drill round. The neck is very slight.
If you don't mind it being a bit long, the Tamiya brass US 75mm ammo looks very nice.
Best wishes,
Grant

I also noted on redleg's 75mm howitzer build that he used the old Verlinden 75mm howitzer kit, #193. Looks real good.
