Does anyone have any information whether the US Army uses slat armour on its M113A3s?

As Frenchy says, we did. They were only used through about '07 though. After that, MRAPs replaced M113s since the M113 was still too vulnerable to IED attack.
More pics.
As far as I know, noone makes a resin or PE AM slat armor set for the M113 though.

I hope you are feeling up to the challenge, Paul. I have too many kits on my bench to start a scratch build of such magnitude.

At least some slat-fitted M113 variants were still used in March 2011, like this M1064 belonging to the Mortar platoon, 2nd Bn., 7th Cav. Regt, 1st Cavalry Division in Iraq :

This would be a nice kit for Hobby Boss, since they do plastic slat.

This makes sense since it is a specialized vehicle, mortar carrier, that doesn't have an MRAP equivelant. Also, most of the time, the mortars stay on the FOB and support from there. They don't venture out amongst the IEDs often.

The Australian Army trialled Bar/Slat Armour on M113's in 1968 in South Vietnam.
From memory (I have an image of it here somewhere) it looked very close to the pictures above.

I wanted to compare the US bar armour with that used by Canada on its TLAV (M113A3) in Afghanistan. The slat is almost identical, but not quite, the differences being at the rear of the hull.
A PE set could be made with options for a CA or US version. Just working on some retirement ideas.

Thanks Rick!
Actually when looking at your photos the Slat looks to be identical for both the US an CA versions. ( I like using that new CA abbreviation for Canadian Army) Now I have to find a friendly LCMM in Ottawa who is willing to part with some drawings. There is the installation manual on line but the drawings are all oblique and unfortunately designed to make the maintainers life easy, not the modellers.
The rubber band track is going to be fun too.

There is an additional diamond pattern treadplate added between the front slat sections and the engine hatch on top of the mounts as well as the add-on armoured side skirts on the Canadian version.
I threw out the suggestion for an M113 slat armour set to Eduard a couple of years ago on the grounds it could be used for US and Canadian vehicles but they didn't bite at the time. It would be great to have a PE set to add to the Best Value Models M113A3 TLAV or a US version.
Don't forget about the actual mounting frames for the hull sides that go over the add-on side hull armour.

OK, I am hooked. Can anyone provide me with where I can find some technical info on the slat armor for the M113. I am thinking that will be the next project for CSM Designs. I really need some measurements for the mounting brackets. The slat I can figure out, its the underneath stuff I need some help with. Thanks.

FYI my company in the 10th Mountain picked up two M113's with slat for some reason while in Iraq in 06-07. The M113 is not normaly part of a light engineer company's tool kit (neither was teh Panther II or the AVLB we had) but we got two anyway, never really used them. I have some pictures somewhere if anyone is interested drop me an e-mail

If it helps the cause, you can have a look at my 40 photo walkaround of the M1064 with slat. It may not be too different from what's been posted already, but you never know - it may have that one shot you've been lacking.
I'll try posting a direct link rather than an actual photo in the hopes that it brings you right into the Photobucket album.

Yo Slat Boy,
Get yer Stryker done first, before you start new projects. Make sure you are at the meeting on Saturday, you will have to leave Norman...
A set of 113 slat or bar armor would be nice.

OK here is a rough drawing of where I am. The black represents the base kit, drawn off the Academy hull. The red is the additional armor, and the blue is the bar armor.
I am working on the front and rear pieces now and running into some hang ups. I also have to finish the mounting hardware for the side panels but these shouldn't be to difficult (I hope!). The front and rear sections will be the hardest.
