Hello everyone,

I just purchased some paints and some weathering products and I had a few questions. I have got some Vallejo Matt varnish and gloss varnish are they the right thing to use to give the model a matt finish or give it a gloss coat before applying the decals (the liquid isn’t colorless but rather looks like diluted PVA glue). I also got the Vallejo crackle medium and I am not quite sure how to use it.

Lastly I also got Vallejo pigments but I don’t have a pigment fixing solution, how can I fix them on the model. Any tips for that?

Thanks’ in advance!

Hi Vlad

You can fix pigment with several products such for exemple acrylic resin, isopropyl alcohol, turpenoid... or glass/matt varnishes

Regarding matt varnish, it'll be the last coat that you'll give on your model. Before you should give a gloss coat to improve decals adhesion. Furthermore a glass-satin coat is the best base for oil washes and filters.
Be careful because varnishes have to be well thinned before the use (as you've noticed they are quite thick). The best way to apply them is using the airbrush. If you don't dilute them in a right way, you could have unesthetic white stains on your model
I've never used the crackle medium, I suppose you have to mix it with the paits to obtain a crackle paint coat

Have a good job with them

Cheers

Hi Vlad, I use Vallejo varnishes all the time you can hand brush them but the airbrush gives a finer finish, thin coats are best but make sure you shake them very well then shake them again because they tend to seperate in the bottle other than that great product.

Just remember to mask off any glazed/clear parts when applying varnish as it will turn them cloudy!
