I had the pleasure of meeting a tanker from the Korean war the otherday, and want to build a model of his tank. I have two Dragon kits and the Tamiya. Which one is the better starting point? Also what are the pit falls with the two brands and what do I need to revise?

thanks in advance

Hi Gary,

If this is the 1/35 tamiya kit I am thinking of, it is the better start. it does have a working suspension after all!

Happy holidays!

Gary,

The Tamiya offering is quite accurate and a great build, BUT: the tracks are wrong. What you need is the T80 tracks. The older DML offering has these but they are a PITA (believe me, I just assembled them for an M46...). However, the Cyber Hobby Orange box has the correct tracks in DS and as a bonus offers the parts to build an M26A1 should you so desire. Can't comment on any of the Hobby Boss Offering as I haven't seen any. Here's a link to the box art of the Orange box offering.

Personally I'd probably go with the Orange Box offering for a Korean War M26/M26A1. If you don't care about the tracks go with Tamiya, great build and working suspension.

HTH!
Cheers!

T81 tracks (as included in Tamiya's kit) are OK for Korea :

But other details have to be taken into account...See here

Yup, sorry for that. I was just browsing through my books and noticed several pics of Marine M26 with the older tracks. All these are from early in the war. Haven't seen any Army M26 with said tracks however.

Cheers!

spoke to Bob again, and he said his tank was an M26a1. Also a treat for all us tread heads is that he's just finished a History Channel documentry on armored war fare in the Korean War. I got to watch it, and believe me you all will find it very interesting. Think they plan on airing it next month.
