Hi guys,
I have a rather stupid question. I know the desert is hard on vehicles, but do they rust. I've been told by some friends that due to the low humidity in the desert air that metals don't rust. I'm finishing up Tamiya's LRDG chevy, so you can see the importance of the answer. Thanks in advance.

Low humidity would mean little rust.....Not to mention a sand storm would "sandblast" the rust off.........

According to several tankers I know, rust is very minimal in the desert. I have seen tracks that were dirt yand scratched up, but with no rust on them at all.

For rust to accumulate, it goes to the process of oxidation (Am I in the right track?). It means, for rust to happen, water + metal. Rust in desert vehicles are inevitable but they occur very rarely.

Hi all,
Just returned from the Mid East..... During my stay I had the opertunity to see umpteen veh, both Mil and Civi, most of which had little or no rust. The area of my service was a little higher in humidity than others but it was still rare to see rust on even the oldest of cars, with the exception of the burned out wrecks pulled off to the side of the road (verry poor drivers). As far as the Mil specific stuff.... between it's constant use in a sand filled enviornment and the fairly regular bombardment buy sand storms, it was all pretty much rust free.
Cheers!
