Hi, I'm working on my first German vehicle that I'm painting in the German Grey base coloring. As this is something I've never done before, I was wondering about what coloring of wash to use on it so that this wash will stand out.

On the other German stuff I've built--in German Yellow--I've used washes of van Dyck Brown, Burnt Sienna, sometimes mixed with a tad of Mars black, because the darker coloring of this wash tends to stand out on the yellow base of the weapon. And baiscally do what a wash does to a vehicle.

Now I was wondering what color(s) I should use on the Pz. Gr. to achieve the same sort of of 'effect' for this paint. Maybe Bunt Sienna with some white added or a light red of some color.

Just curious here what others who have painted vehicles in the Panzer Grey have used for their washes and how they have worked for them.

Thanks, and take care, sgirty

Captain sgirty
I think your right on the mark with Burnt Sienna. This will leave a nice rusty hue, by adding a little white you'll have just what German grey needs.
Good luck

I'd go for burnt sienna with the addition of a bit of black just to darken it a bit...

This is what I do...

First off - I don't use the German Grey (Tamiya in my case) directly out of the bottle. I mix in about 15% tan or white. This gives the overall color of the vehicle some contrast. Once this base coat is sprayed on, I lighten the mix a bit further - and spray the centers of panels, etc. Now I have a vehicle that is a shade lighter than Panzer Grey - but I darken the color with my washes to get the final color I am after. I typically use burnt umber darkened with a bit of black for my wash color.

StuG III - before final wash (note the color fading on the panels);

StuG III - after final wash (this picture was taken in poor lighting, so it looks too dark - but actually it is pretty close to the panzer grey color from Tamiya straight out of the bottle);

So - I guess I just lighten the origional grey to a point that my washes are noticable, and use these to darken the paint back to true panzer grey color. I hope this made sense.....

HTH-
Jeff
