Howdy All,
My question to the group is regarding the 'true' colours of Soviet supplied Iraqi armour. My understanding is that, generally speaking, the Soviet's pretty much painted the vast majority of their tanks and armoured vehicles in the tried and true Soviet green......correct? (again, generally speaking). So, basing the rest of my query on this for the moment, wouldn't that also indicate that Iraqi tanks, and I'm thinking the T-55 in particular, would have a coat of original Soviet green underneath the Iraqi desert yellow colour??
One of the practice's I use (when planning on displaying a substantial amount of wear & tear) is 'priming' my AFV's with TT metalizer paint, then painting as usual, and actually simulating that wear & tear by gently removing the upper coat to show the metal 'undercoat' beneath.
Applying this personal technique to the Soviet supplied Iraqi T-55 in desert yellow colouring, wouldn't I be correct to 'undercoat' the model in Soviet green (enamel), and then gently remove the topcoat of desert yellow (acrylic) in selected places to accurately show wear & tear with the green showing through???
I'm really curious what you all think of this......make's sense to me (that's why I'm worried )
Thx in advance.
Tread out.

Tread,
I have just checked my references and I found that Iraqi vehicles really show green paint under the chipped sand color... I know I have seen many models that show that too... not that it has to be correct, but I guess most modelers did look at the references before chipping their models.
Hope this helps,
Mario M.

Howdy Maki,
Many thx for the input sir! I appreciate your checking for me. Since the 'modern' armour thing is somewhat new for me, I'm just trying to do my proper 'due diligence'. I mean, I don't want to take the chance of incurring the wrath of the GREAT IPMS DEMON/GODS now, do I?
I too have checked around and paid pretty darn close attention to the paint chipping on the Soviet supplied Iraqi vehicles (of which there is a significant amount of chipping), and I constantly see what looks like the standard shade of Soviet green we've come to expect. I see this on all types of vehicles as well, so that makes me think it's not some 'trick-of-the-eye' or something.
Anyway, many thanks again for your help. BTW, have you ever tried my method of simulating 'wear & tear' on an AFV? Curious how it worked for you if you did.
